The new Patek Philippe Calatrava 8 Days 5328G-001 introduces a new movement displaying day, date, and 8-day power reserve. Price €71,280
The new Patek Philippe Calatrava 8 Days Reference 5328G-001 introduces a completely new movement, offering displays for the day and date, along with an indicator for its remarkable 8-day power reserve.
Extended power reserves like this are technical feats not only because of the increased autonomy but especially due to the challenge of maintaining rate accuracy and stability over the full duration.
Housed in a 41 mm x 10.52 mm white gold case, the Reference 5328G-001 stands out with a caseband adorned in the emblematic Clous de Paris (hobnail) guilloché pattern. First seen on the bezel of Reference 96D in 1934 and brought to prominence again in 1985 with the much-admired Reference 3919, this motif has become one of the hallmarks of Patek Philippe’s Calatrava style.
In a refined touch, similar to References 5326 and 5226, the new model uses a construction where the lugs are attached to the case back. This enables the Clous de Paris pattern to wrap continuously around the entire caseband. Water resistance is rated at 3 bar (30 metres / 100 feet).
The textured blue dial features a black gradient rim and is paired with white gold syringe-style applied numerals and matching hands, all coated with white luminescent material.
The arrangement of the indications along a vertical axis ensures optimal readability and gives the watch a distinctive personality.
At 12 o’clock, an arched power reserve display shows the remaining autonomy, while at 6 o’clock, the day aperture, a pointer date, and the subsidiary seconds form a clean and balanced cluster.
The new manually wound Calibre 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J, visible through a sapphire crystal case back, is a result of five years of development. It builds upon the rectangular Calibre 28-20 REC 8J PS IRM C J introduced in 2013 in the Gondolo 5200, now reconfigured into a round architecture suitable for a Calatrava-style case.
Faithful to Patek Philippe’s spirit of innovation, this new movement incorporates several technical optimisations especially in energy management and the instant jump mechanisms for both the day and date. It was designed to provide eight full days of autonomy, with a ninth reserve day flagged in red on the arc-shaped indicator at 12 o’clock.
The watch continues to run during this final day, although accuracy may begin to decline as amplitude drops. To maintain optimal performance, it is recommended to wind the watch by the end of the eighth day. The movement will stop entirely at the end of the ninth day.
The calibre features the exclusive Pulsomax escapement, with a lever and escape wheel made from Silinvar, a silicon-based material known for its lightness, hardness and resistance to magnetism. Developed under the “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” programme, the Pulsomax’s high performance is made possible through precision DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching) manufacturing and its refined geometry. It is paired with a Spiromax balance spring, also in Silinvar, for exceptional stability.
The 8-day autonomy is made possible through two barrels mounted in series. The first includes a slip spring, enabling both barrels to be wound simultaneously. As the main barrel unwinds, the auxiliary barrel continuously feeds energy back into it operating like a pair of communicating vessels to ensure consistent performance.
The day and date indication features a crisp instantaneous jump mechanism. A 24-hour wheel with a cam and a dual-function spring enables both indications to shift sharply at midnight. A lever with two beaks falls onto the cam, simultaneously activating both the perforated day disk (designed to minimise inertia) and the pointer date hand.
Thanks to the specific shape of the dual-function spring, the wearer can set the time forward or backward at any time even during the midnight jump without any risk to the mechanism. A stop-seconds function allows the time to be set to the precise second.
Date correction is only required five times per year on the first day of March, May, June, October, and December via a corrector located between 3 and 4 o’clock on the caseband.
The new Patek Philippe Calatrava 8 Days Reference 5328G-001 is delivered with two straps: a blue calfskin leather strap with a textile pattern and cream stitching (fitted as standard), and an additional strap in grained taupe calfskin leather. It features a new patented triple-blade fold-over clasp designed to enhance safety and comfort, while allowing quick and easy strap changes without the need for tools. The watch is priced at €71,280. patek.com
