Omega presents the new Speedmaster ‘The First Omega in Space’ with Master Chronometer movement

Omega presents the new Speedmaster ‘The First Omega in Space’ with Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. Full details and prices in the article.
In 1959, Omega released the 2nd generation of the Speedmaster family, the reference CK 2998 which differed from the first Speedmaster CK 2915, introduced in 1957, by its Alpha hands, symmetrical case, and dark bezel.

Three years later, the Speedmaster CK 2998 became the “first Omega in space” on the wrist of astronaut Walter "Wally" Schirra during the “Sigma 7” mission of the Mercury program (read the complete history of the Speedmaster here).

This year, Omega brings back the design known as ‘The First Omega in Space’ in the main Speedmaster collection, now with an updated Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement.

The new Speedmaster ‘The First Omega in Space’ edition maintains the classic 2nd generation style from 1959, with a symmetrical 39.70 mm polished-brushed stainless steel case. The total thickness is 13.4 mm, and the lug width measures 19 mm.

The dark bezel ring, crafted from black aluminum, features the Speedmaster’s iconic tachymeter scale, including thesignature “Dot Over Ninety”, a hallmark of the earliest Speedmaster models.

Under the new hesalite-like shaped sapphire crystal, Omega presents a CVD-coated dial in a captivating grey-blue hue, reminiscent of the tones found on some CK 2998 models from the 1960s.

The hour markers and Alpha hands, filled with vintage Super-LumiNova, are paired with a white varnished central seconds 'Baton' hand, harmonizing with the dial’s transferred markings.

In tribute to Omega’s heritage, the watch features two vintage Omega logos—one on the dial and another on the crown.

The historical homage continues on the caseback, where Omega has integrated a Seahorse medallion along with engravings that read: “SPEEDMASTER”, “THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE”, and “OCTOBER 3, 1962.”

Inside, the hand-wound Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a 50-hour power reserve.

In line with the 3 Hz operating frequency, the minute track is divided into 3 segments per second. This ensures that when the chronograph seconds hand is stopped, the readout is precise.

The new Omega Speedmaster ‘The First OMEGA in Space’ is available with a black leather strap (ref. 310.32.40.50.06.001), a brown leather strap (ref. 310.32.40.50.06.002), or a full metal bracelet with “flat links” and OMEGA’s patented comfort release adjustment system (ref. 310.30.40.50.06.001). Prices are set at €8,400 / US$ 7,500 for the leather strap versions and €8,800 / US$ 7,900 for the bracelet. omegawatches.com
