Review: Mido Ocean Star 39

Just a few weeks ago, Mido launched the Ocean Star 39 diver's watch, introducing a new 39 mm case size to its Ocean Star collection.

Following our introductory article, we had the chance to spend a few days with one of the four available variations: the navy blue-to-black gradient dial, reference M026.907.11.041.00. We are now pleased to share our impressions and pictures.

The Ocean Star 39 comes in a 39 mm x 10.5 mm stainless steel case whose lines are well highlighted by the alternation of satin-brushed surfaces and polished edges. For its watches Mido exclusively uses high-grade 316L stainless steel to ensure complete compatibility with the skin and corrosion resistance.

The case is equipped with a 120-click unidirectional rotating bezel with a dual-tone black and blue aluminium ring featuring a 60-minute graduation.

A white Super-LumiNova dot at 12 o'clock can be used to mark the start of the diving time (or any other event you want to measure).

The screw-down crown contributes to making the watch water resistant up to a pressure of 20 bar (200 metres / 660 feet). Once unscrewed, the crown has three positions: Position 1 for manual winding, Position 2 for date correction, and Position 3 for time-setting with stop seconds.

Protected by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides, the dial is characterised by a wave-like pattern in relief that becomes more or less visible depending on how the light hits the surface.

The large round or triangular indexes, along with the diamond-cut hours/minutes hands and the central seconds hand, ensure excellent legibility at first glance.

The white Super-LumiNova used for the three hands and the hour markers glow in blue in low-light environments if the dial was previously exposed to the ultra-violet radiation of daylight or to some artificial light sources.

A date window at 3 o'clock completes the dial indications.

The Ocean Star 39 is paired with a three-link steel bracelet with satin-brushed and polished finishes. Its double folding clasp is fitted with a practical extension system to increase the total length by up to 15 mm. This is a useful feature not only for wearing the watch over a diving suit but also for maintaining ideal comfort as temperatures change.

The ideal size ensures comfortable wearability on average wrists. For reference, the wrist in our pictures measures 17.8 cm / 7 inches.

Under the solid caseback, embellished with the iconic starfish emblem of the Ocean Star, the self-winding Caliber 72 (based on ETA A31.111) beats at the frequency of 3.5 Hz (25,200 vibrations per hour) with a remarkable power reserve of 72 hours or three full days.

Its Nivachron balance-spring is made from a titanium-based metal alloy that contributes to reduce the effect of magnetic fields while improving accuracy over time and resistance to shocks.
