Grand Seiko SBGW314 "Hoshizukiyo": a tribute to the first Grand Seiko

The Grand Seiko SBGW314 Hoshizukiyo, a reinterpretation of the first Grand Seiko, takes its name from a Japanese word for starry night. Price €28,900

The new Grand Seiko SBGW314 “Hoshizukiyo” takes its name from a Japanese word meaning "starry night". It refers to a night illuminated by the stars, often associated with a serene and beautiful atmosphere.

A limited edition of 50 pieces worldwide, this model is a re-interpretation of the very first Grand Seiko launched in 1960, a timepiece characterised by a timeless design that was produced with the goal of delivering excellent legibility, great comfort on the wrist, and excellent reliability.

The main elements recalling the first Grand Seiko can be found in the multifaceted markers and dauphine hands, the typeface used for the Grand Seiko logo, and the “Diashock 24 jewels” inscription. 

Just like in 1960, the 8-pointed star applied at 6 o’clock on the dial, prerogative of Grand Seiko’s “special dials”, recalls that markers are made of solid gold.

The “S” mark of the crown is a reminder of the original model’s birthplace: Suwa Seikosha (now Shinshu Watch Studio). 

The 38 mm x 10.9 mm round case is crafted from 18K rose gold and is equipped with a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating to protect the dark blue dial, which is slightly sunrayed and enriched by a sparkle-like finish, reminiscent of the starry night that gives the name to the timepiece.

Water resistant to 3 bar (30 metres / 100 feet), the Grand Seiko SBGW314 “Hoshizukiyo” features a a see-through case back to display the hand-wound Calibre 9S64, operating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and offering a power reserve of 72 hours (three days). 

As the mainspring unwinds, its torque diminishes gradually to ensure that accuracy remains stable. The mean daily rate of the movement is +5 to -3 seconds per day before assembly, while the normal usage accuracy is +10 to -1 seconds per day.

Paired with a dark blue crocodile leather strap fastened by a 18K rose gold three-fold deployant clasp, and delivered with an additional brown crocodile leather strap, the Grand Seiko SBGW314 “Hoshizukiyo” will be available from June 2024, exclusively at Grand Seiko Boutiques worldwide, at the price of Euro 28,900. grand-seiko.com
