Piaget Polo 79 unveiled for 150th Maison Anniversary

Piaget unveils the new Polo 79 as the Maison celebrates its 150th anniversary. Price CHF 68,500 before taxes.

In 1979, Piaget unveiled a wristwatch that would go on to define the very spirit of the 1980s, a brilliant example of modern design that seamlessly integrated the case and bracelet into one cohesive aesthetic whole, all bathed in the incomparable glow of pure gold.

Advertised as ‘the world’s ultimate sportswatch’, the Piaget Polo was as revolutionary as it was chic.

Now, as the Maison celebrates its 150th anniversary, this iconic timepiece is reintroduced as the Piaget Polo79. 

After 45 years, the new Polo 79 stands as a testament to Piaget's enduring legacy with a design that blends horological heritage and contemporary refinement.

The signature motif is imparted by a construction of alternating polished gadroon and brushed block links continuing seamlessly from bracelet, to case, and even to the dial, all meticulously crafted from yellow gold.

Piaget equipped the initial editions of the Piaget Polo with the renowned 7P Calibre, which, at the time, held the distinction of being the thinnest quartz movement globally. This remarkable feat was later surpassed by the even slimmer 1.95 mm 8P. However, the mechanical Calibre 9P was also used for certain models of Piaget Polo. The model's widespread acclaim led to its appearance in a diverse range of variations: round, square, gem-set, bi-colour gold, time-only, perpetual calendar, and even appearing on a leather strap.

Vintage advertisements from the 1980s

For the new Piaget Polo 79, the quartz calibre has been set aside in favour of the ultra-thin 1200P1 in-house self-winding calibre that can be admired through the crystal back of a case that has been slightly enlarged to 38 mm.

Piaget’s Calibre 1200P represents the fourth generation of its ultra-thin self-winding movements and measures just 2.35 mm. Beating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour), it guarantees a 44-hour power reserve.
