Hanhart introduces the new 417 ES Moby Dick, a white dial chronograph inspired to a model from the 1950s. Price €1,940

The Hanhart reference 417 was used by the German armed forces from the mid-1950s and was appreciated for combining robustness, reliability, and readability in one watch. It was originally designed as a pilot's chronograph and featured a black dial, but the German watchmaker also released a version with a white dial and blued hands for use in the navy and medical services.  

The original Moby Dick

The historical model, of which only few pieces still exist worldwide, is known among collectors as the Moby Dick. The surviving examples of this chronograph are now coveted timepieces for collectors.

The new Hanhart 417 ES Moby Dick is directly inspired by that model, with the letter abbreviation "ES" standing for ‘Edelstahl’ (German for stainless steel), as it once did.

Maintaining many distinctive features of the historical model, this release comes in a contemporary-sized 42 mm case, topped by a domed sapphire crystal, for a total height of just 13.3 mm. 

The fluted bezel, a typical Hanhart style feature, rotates continuously in both directions. Instead of being red as usual, on the Moby Dick the position marker matches the colour of the dial. The crown is adorned with the historic Hanhart "h”.

The dial has a bi-compax layout and features thermally blued hands that stand out beautifully against the white backdrop. Numerals and fonts are based on the early 417.

A new feature is the use of Light Old Radium Super-LumiNova material in a subtle cream shade that glows green in darker environment.

The hand-wound Swiss-made SW510 caliber beats behind the screw-down stainless steel case back. 

Based on the Sellita SW 510 M and featuring a stop-second function, this highly reliable movement operates at the frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and offers a power reserve of up to 58 hours when fully wound. It is antimagnetic up to 16.000 A/m according to DIN 8309.

Water resistant up to a pressure of 10 bars (100 metres / 330 feet), the watch is paired with a strap made of light brown leather with a steel pin buckle featuring the historic Hanhart logo. For further style options, waistband bracelets in black and dark brown are also available.
