Since its inception in 2001, the Freak collection has consistently showcased exceptional timepieces that disrupted the traditional landscape of Swiss Haute Horlogerie with their unique aesthetic. Furthermore, the collection has been a pioneer in various significant innovations within watchmaking. This includes the introduction of the first silicon escapement in 2001, a diamond escapement in 2005, and the groundbreaking Dual Ulysse escapement in the same year.

In 2019, Ulysse Nardin continued to push boundaries by unveiling the Freak X. While retaining its signature absence of a dial and hands, this model marked an evolution by featuring a crown (you can read about it here). 

Now, the Swiss brand introduces a new iteration of this model, the Freak X OPS, with "OPS" standing for "operations." This designation is a nod to its colours and appearance, which are somewhat reminiscent of military equipment.

Its 43 mm x 13.38 mm features case, bezel and crown in black DLC titanium with the flanks in a khaki green carbon fibre composite, which blends black carbon fibres and green epoxy resin. Each case is unique.

A black (ref. 2303-270-2A-KAKI/0A) or green (ref. 2303-270-2A-KAKI/0B) fabric strap completes the adventurous look.

Freed from the dial, the Freak X directly displays the UN-230 self-winding movement with its one-hour orbital carousel tourbillon suspended by a bridge that acts as the minute hand, and a second bridge serving as the hour hand. Both are treated with khaki green Super-LumiNova that glows green in low-light conditions.

 

The real eye-catcher of the ensemble is the super-light and extra-wide balance wheel in silicium, with nickel flyweights and stabilizing micro-blades. Beating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour), the UN-230 calibre has a power reserve of 72 hours.
