Blancpain X Swatch - Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Collection

To mark the 70th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms (you can read its complete history here), Blancpain collaborated with Swatch to create a playful version of its iconic scuba diving watch.

The two Swatch Group brands are presenting five Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms models that combine the best of both brands with innovative, bioceramic, water-resistant timepieces and a mechanical movement with a 90-hour power reserve. Each model celebrates one of the five oceans, the conservation of which is so dear to Blancpain. 

These five Blancpain X Swatch models are made from bioceramic, a unique and patented blend of two-thirds ceramic and one-third biomaterials derived from castor oil. 

While the colours chosen for this collaboration clearly indicate that this is not a traditional Blancpain watch, the main features of the Fifty Fathoms are still present in the Swatch version: the typical case, its unidirectional rotating bezel to measure the duration of the dive, as well as its self-winding movement protected from magnetic fields – in this instance the SISTEM51.

This Swiss-made mechanism features just 51 parts, including only one central screw, has a 90-hour autonomy, and is fully anti-magnetic thanks to its hairspring made with Nivachron, ensuring high precision. 

Measuring 42.3 mm x 14.4 mm, the cases are water resistant to 9 bar (90 metres /300 feet).

Each model features the shared Blancpain X Swatch logos on the dial and crown. The straps are made from recycled fishing nets removed from the ocean floor.

The Artic Ocean model comes in a fiery red Dendronotus Frondosus colour and features a special symbol on its contrasting soft beige-colored dial: a red trefoil on a yellow background with a white cross cutting through it. The words “NO RADIATIONS” placed boldly below the logo are a nod to the legendary Fifty Fathoms heritage and the rich history of diver’s watches in the sixties. 

The Pacific Ocean model is inspired by the vibrant colors of the Chromodoris Kuiteri found in the largest and deepest of the five oceans. It is equipped with a date indicator between 4 and 5 o'clock.

The Atlantic Ocean sports deep and intense blue shades, with a blue dragon represented on the back of the timepiece.

The Indian Ocean version is characterised by an energetic green colour with splashes of orange giving rise to images of coral reefs.

The fifth model is dedicated to the Antarctic Ocean and features a bicolor water contact indicator that detects the presence of water. Positioned at 6 o’clock on its cool gray gradient watch dial, this sensor is an important feature in military diving watches.

The watches of the Blancpain X Swatch Bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms Collection are available from September 9 at selected Swatch stores worldwide at the price of Euro 390 / US$ 400.
