Originally introduced in 2005, A. Lange & Söhne's Lange 1 Time Zone offers a convenient way to read both local and second time zone times at a glance.
In 2020, the renowned Saxon watchmaker unveiled a facelift of this model, featuring a new in-house calibre. The timepiece was presented in three variations: pink gold with an argenté dial, white gold with a black dial, and a limited edition of 100 pieces in yellow gold with a champagne dial (you can read about them here).
This year, A. Lange & Söhne introduces a new edition of the Lange 1 Time Zone, showcasing a 950-platinum case paired with a rhodium-coloured dial made of solid silver, resulting in a classic and monochrome appearance, a first for this model. The dimensions remain unchanged, with a diameter of 41.9 mm and a thickness of 10.9 mm.
Based on the distinctive Lange 1 design with its asymmetric dial and oversized date display, the updated Lange 1 Time Zone ensures exceptional legibility.
The larger time circle indicates the home time, while the smaller time circle displays the time in the second time zone. By activating the corrector button at 8 o'clock, the city ring adjusts in one-hour increments in an easterly direction. Simultaneously, the hour hand on the smaller subsidiary dial advances by one hour, aligning with the local time of the selected city as indicated by the gold arrow marker.
The daylight-saving time indication adds a refined technical feature. A coloured segment in the arrow indicates if the selected city observes daylight-saving time. The small aperture is filled in red for cities implementing daylight-saving time, while it remains unchanged for locations observing standard time throughout the year.
To differentiate between day and night in both time zones, the Lange 1 Time Zone features coloured ring-shaped day/night indicators located in the centre of each time circle and linked to the hour hands. When the hour hand is in the dial-coloured area, the display refers to the interval between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.; when the blue background appears, it refers to the interval between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The Lange 1 Time Zone also includes a cleverly designed synchronization mechanism that allows the zone time to be transferred from the smaller subsidiary dial to the larger one, enabling the definition of a new main time as home time. By pulling the crown to the second position, both zone times can be adjusted synchronously.
Holding down the time-zone correction button stops the hour hand on the zone-time dial, enabling independent setting of the new main time. The oversized date, connected to the main time, can be corrected using the date correction button at 10 o'clock if necessary.
Beating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour), the manufacture calibre L141.1 achieves a 72-hour power reserve with a single spring barrel.
Notable technical details include a classic screw balance, a self-produced freely oscillating balance spring calibrated to a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, a three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver, screwed gold chatons, blued screws, an elaborate whiplash precision index adjuster as well as hand-engraved balance and intermediate-wheel cocks.
