TAG Heuer - Monza Flyback Chronometer Carbon

To celebrate the victory of Niki Lauda's first F1 world championship title with Ferrari in 1975, Heuer (at the time the official timekeeper of the Ferrari Team) launched a new chronograph named Monza in 1976. Expressing the brand’s love for motorsport, the name intended to pay homage to the fastest F1 track in the world.

More recently, in 2016, TAG Heuer reissued the Monza in an all black version featuring a Grade 5 titanium case coated with titanium carbide (you can read about it here).

This year, the Swiss brand reinterprets this sporty classic with the new Monza Flyback Chronometer, a special edition whose 42 mm case is made of ultra-lightweight and resistant carbon with black DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) crown and push buttons.

Protected by a domed sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment, the skeletonized black dial features a two-register layout with a translucent fumé blue sapphire crystal chronograph counter at 3 and the permanent second at 6 o’clock. 

At 9 o’clock, the date window is in blue luminescent, a first for TAG Heuer. The blue lacquered indexes and black and white lacquered hours and minutes hands are treated with Super-LumiNova for improved legibility in poor light conditions. Red accents further enliven the dial composition.

The flyback function offers the possibility to reset the chronograph without having to first stop it, thus allowing an even faster and more accurate measurement of events. 

In terms of functions, this model also offers a tachymeter scale which indicates average speed for a 1-kilometer or 1-mile distance, measured using the indicator on the black flange, as well as a pulsometer, which helps determine one’s heart rate per minute. 

This function is used based on the blue line in the top right quadrant of the dial which is calibrated to 15 heartbeats per minute offering a range of 60 to 200 beats per minute. It is sufficient to start the chronograph and count 15 heartbeats, to read the heart rate when stopping the chronograph. 

Visible through the transparent sapphire crystal of the black PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) Grade 5 titanium screw-down case back, the in-house Calibre Heuer 02 Flyback is certified by COSC as a chronometer. Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour), this self-winding movement offers a power reserve of 80 hours.
