Hands-on review: Nomos Ahoi Atlantic Date 40 ref.558 and Ahoi neomatik Atlantic 36 ref.567. Distinctive look, quality finishes. Price from €3,520
Last June, Nomos Glashütte launched two new versions of its sporty Ahoi three-hand model, whose name is a reference to the Ahoy signal word used by people in boats to attract attention.
The two new models differ for the diameter of their cases, the presence or not of the date function, and their movements. We had the opportunity to spend some time with them and we are now delighted to share our pictures and report.
The first one is the Ahoi Atlantic Date ref. 558 which comes in a 40.3 x 10.6 mm bipartite case crafted from stainless steel with a polished finish.
Its design is characterised by two guards protecting the crown from impacts. This is screw-down to ensure waterproofness up to a pressure of 20 ATM (200 metres / 660 feet) and make the watch suitable also for diving.
The Atlantic blue colour of the dial offers an ideal contrast to the white indexes/numerals, the sand-coloured hour markers and the rhodium-plated hands, which stand out clearly in any light conditions thanks to a generous Super-Luminova coating that glows in green in the dark.
The red hand of the snailed small seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock adds a vibrant touch to the ensemble. As its name suggests, this reference also features a date display, positioned just below the small seconds.
The domed sapphire crystal is enhanced by an anti-reflective treatment inside and outside.
Fixed with six screws, the transparent sapphire crystal caseback reveals the Nomos caliber DUW 5101, a 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour) automatic movement offering 42 hours of power reserve and equipped with a stop-seconds mechanism, a date indicator and the proprietary Nomos swing system adjusted according to chronometer standards.
The other model is the Ahoi neomatik Atlantic ref. 567, housed in a polished stainless steel case which has been reduced to 36.3 mm x 9.6 mm while maintaining identical proportions and performances in terms of water resistance and robustness.
Its dial differs in the lack of date aperture and, just below the logo of the brand, the addition of a yellow "neomatik" inscription used to identify that this model is driven by a Nomos' ultra-thin neomatik movement.
Visible through the transparent sapphire crystal caseback, the in-house developed neomatik caliber DUW 3001 is characterised by a three-quarter plate architecture, ribbing polish, thermally-blued screws as well as the tempered blue balance spring denoting the proprietary swing system ensuring the highest precision and reliability. The bidirectional winding rotor is enriched by gold-plated embossing.
Beating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vph), this slim movement (just 3.2 mm) offers remarkable features including decentralised seconds, a stop-seconds mechanism and incabloc shock protection. The power reserve is up to 43 hours.
The Nomos Glashütte Ahoi Atlantic Date 40 ref. 558 featured in our review is matched to a waterproof textile blue-black strap (lug width 20 mm) and has a suggested price of Euro 3,620 / US$ 4,660.
The Ahoi neomatik Atlantic 36 ref. 567 is completed by a comfortable Nomos Sport steel bracelet secured to the wrist by a deployant clasp (lug width 18 mm) and retails at Euro 3,520 / US$ 4,440.
