Glashütte Original is launching today the SeaQ Chronograph, the first diver’s watch of the German brand to be equipped with a chronograph movement.

Developed with accuracy, robustness, ease to use and a captivating aesthetic as key requirements, the SeaQ Chronograph combines a flyback chronograph powered by a state-of-the-art manufacture movement with a watch that meets the rigorous requirements of the ISO and DIN standards for diver’s watches. 

To meet the ISO 6425 and DIN 8306 standards, a watch must withstand extreme temperature changes, resist saltwater corrosion, ensure optimal legibility in the dark and have a unidirectional rotating bezel with a scale allowing the diver to determine how much time remains for the dive. 

For the water resistance test, Glashütte Original exceeded the standard and tested the SeaQ up to a pressure of 30 bar (300 meters / 1,000 feet). They also raised the bar for the chronograph features integrating a column wheel switch and a flyback mechanism. 

Shock resistance is another essential requirement for a diver's watch. In case the watch is dropped, it is particularly important that the dial does not buckle or warp on impact, which could interfere with, or even block, the hands. As a result, the designers placed a hollow hexagonal socket screw, made of stainless steel, in the centre of the dial. It is placed from above over the hand shafts, thus fixing the dial to the plate before the hands are mounted. Thanks to this small but very effective construction detail, the dial remains securely in place, even in the event of a shock.

The debut model of the SeaQ Chronograph comes in a 43.2 mm x 16.95 mm stainless case with a satin-brushed finish alternated by polished details that highlight the dynamic lines. Protected from impacts by two guards, the fluted screw-down crown has a fine wave decoration.

The unidirectional, counter-clockwise rotating bezel features a ceramic inlay which makes this highly exposed element exceptionally scratch-resistant. A blue Super-LumiNova coated triangle marks the dive start time.

Super-LumiNova is also used for the applied hour markers and the hands, making the indications perfectly readable in any light conditions. The domed sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective treatment on both sides. 

The two snailed counters display the chronograph 30 minutes at 3 o’clock and the running seconds at 9 o'clock.

A distinctive element of the eye-catching sunray blue dial is the big aperture at 6 o'clock displaying the date by using two large numerals (Panorama Date).

All adjustments can be performed using the crown: in position 1, the automatic movement is wound, in position 2 the date can be corrected, and in position 3, the time can be set while the second stop is activated. This design made it possible to do without a separate date corrector on the side of the case, thus enhancing the water resistance of the watch.

Visible through the transparent sapphire crystal case back, the automatic movement Calibre 37-23 beats at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) with a power reserve of over 70 hours. Its silicon balance spring offers enhanced resistance to the influence of magnetic fields, for example, and thanks to its steady oscillation, greater rate precision. 

The entire movement is beautifully finished and decorated, something that can be rarely found in a diver’s watch.

Four different straps are available: a three-link satin-brushed stainless steel link bracelet (ref. 1-37-23-02-81-70), two synthetic fabric straps made from recycled fishnets, in grey (ref. 1-37-23-02-81-34) or blue (ref. 1-37-23-02-81-36), and a dark blue rubber strap (ref. 1-37-23-02-81-33).
