Zenith unveils the latest generation of its Chronomaster Open with El Primero with prices starting from €9,200. Zenith novelties 2022. Watches&Wonders

On occasion of the Watches and Wonders event (Geneva, March 30 - April 5), Zenith unveiled the latest generation of its Chronomaster Open, a chronograph that reveals its high-frequency balance wheel through a large dial opening.

Launched in 2003, the Chronomaster Open El Primero marked the first time in the history of watchmaking that a chronograph featured a partially open dial to showcase the regulating organ and escapement (you can read the complete history of the Zenith El Primero here).

More than a simple facelift, the new Chronomaster Open aligns with the new design code of Chronomaster collection, somehow positioning in between the classic Chronomaster Original and the sportier Chronomaster Sport.

The iconic tri-colour dial configuration remains a distinctive design element thanks to a hesalite crystal element that, positioned at 9 o'clock, serves as a readable sub-dial while allowing a view of the silicon star-shaped escape wheel. This is different compared to the previous generation of Chronomaster Open which had a complete cut out.   

Instead of using an applied “frame” like in the former version, Zenith opted for circular openings with chamfered edges for a more contemporary and understated look.

Water resistant up to a pressure of 10 ATM (100 metres / 330 feet), the case has a diameter of 39.5 mm with slimmer lugs, more pronounced polished bevels on the edges, and pump-style pushers. 

Three versions have been presented: in steel with a white (ref. 03.3300.3604/69) or black dial (ref. 03.3300.3604/21), delivered with either a steel bracelet or cordura-effect rubber strap, and a rose gold version with a white dial matched to a blue cordura-effect rubber strap (ref. 18.3300.3604/69).

Visible through the sapphire display back, the El Primero 3604 1/10th of a second automatic chronograph movement is a modified version of the 3600 that debuted in the Chronomaster Sport, featuring an open base plate and bridges that allow for a clearer view of the high-frequency 5 Hz escapement with lubricant-free silicon escape wheel and pallet lever. 

The automatic winding mechanism with an open star-shaped oscillating mass delivers a power reserve of 60 hours.

The retail prices of the new Zenith Chronomaster Open are Euro 9,200 / US$ 9,700 in steel with cordura strap, Euro 9,700  / US$ 10,000 in steel with steel bracelet, and Euro 19,600 / US$ 21,300 in rose gold with cordura strap. zenith-watches.com
