Our review of the Nomos Glashuette
Lambda 175 Years Watchmaking Glashutte with price, specs and lot of pictures
Launched at the beginning of last October, the special Lambda model created by Nomos Glashütte to celebrate 175 years of watchmaking history in the Saxon town of Glashütte comes in three 175-piece limited editions featuring precious enamel dials in white, black and blue, all housed in stainless steel case.
The spring of the swan neck fine adjustment is positioned on top of the balance cock. Hand-engraved by a watchmaker, a message reads “Lovingly produced in Glashütte” in German.
We had the opportunity to wear and test one of them, the black dial version (ref. 960.S2), for an entire week and we are now delighted to share our hands-on experience with this elegant timepiece.
The slim round case of the Lambda 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte is crafted from stainless steel with polished surfaces and a new diameter of 40.5 mm that is half way between the two previously available sizes of 39 mm and 42 mm.
Thanks to the slimness of the movement (3.6 mm), the height of the case is just 8.9 mm including the domed sapphire crystal, thin enough to slip under a shirt cuff.
The tripartite construction of the case guarantees waterproofness to 3 ATM (30 metres / 100 feet), which makes the watch splashproof: wearing it while washing your hands will not cause it any problems, but you should take it off before a dip in the pool.
The lugs are ergonomically shaped to follow the profile of the wrist and enhance the wearing comfort. The slim crown has two positions: in the home position, the watch can be wound by hand; in the second position, it is possible to set the time.
A slender bezel leaves space to the main protagonist of the watch, the glossy enamel dial whose depth effect is emphasised by the slight curvature of both the dial and the sapphire crystal. Depending on the light of the surrounding environment, its colour changes from black to dark gray.
Usually, a power reserve indicator takes up little space in a dial but this is not the case of the Lambda. In fact, in this model the remaining autonomy of the watch can be monitored by means of large 297° arc display tracking 84 hours, or three-and-a-half days, accurate to the hour. The remarkable performance is highlighted by the text on the right of the dial: Gangreserve 84 Stunden, the German for Power Reserve 84 Hours.
The four needle-thin and rhodium-plated hands enhance the elegance of the watch.
After enjoying the beauty of the dial, the wearer can continue to make his/her eyes shine by turning the watch.
Visible through a sapphire crystal case back, the hand-wound DUW 1001 Calibre is adjusted according to chronometer standards. It is the first caliber to bear the title “Deutsche Uhrenwerke Nomos Glashütte.”
A large, slender caliber with twin mainspring barrels and 29 jewels within - with six of them in hand-polished screwed chatons - ensure flawless functioning. All edges are also polished by hand, with black polishing on individual steel parts.
The fine sunburst polishing on the three-quarter plate is typical of Nomos timepieces. By contrast, the regulatory system of screw balance and swan neck fine adjustment in this model has its roots in Glashütte watchmaking history.
Delivered in an elegant full grain leather wallet and completed by a smooth yet robust remborde strap crafted from Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan and secured to the wrist by a polished steel pin buckle with the engraved logo of the brand, the Nomos Glashütte Lambda 175 Years Watchmaking Glashütte ref. 960.S2 offers a clean yet distinctive design, quality in each detail and a beautifully refined manufacture movement.
