The new Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary ref. 310.32.42.50.02.001 is not a limited edition and has a price of €9,700/$9,600
Omega announced a new Speedmaster model that reinforces the link between the Swiss watch brand, NASA and the famous beagle featured in the comic strip Peanuts.
The special connection between Snoopy and NASA first started in the 1960s, when Charles M. Schulz began creating comic strips depicting the famous dog character on the moon. Those animations captured public excitement about America’s adventures into space, and established Snoopy as a symbol of exploration.
In 1968, when NASA went in search of a “face” for its safety programme, Snoopy became the obvious choice. Snoopy became so beloved by NASA’s own astronauts, that they created a very prestigious prize in his name. Designed by Charles M. Schulz, the Silver Snoopy Award depicts the beagle in a spacesuit and wearing his famous Flying Ace scarf. The award is presented by the astronauts themselves, and is given to people or companies who they believe have contributed significantly to “the success of human space flight missions.” To be personally recognised by the flight crews in such a way is considered to be a highly esteemed honour within the industry.
In 1970, Omega received the coveted “Silver Snoopy Award” from the astronauts at NASA, recognising the brand’s unique contributions to space exploration, as well as the Speedmaster’s vital support during the rescue of Apollo 13.
Exactly 50 years later, a special timepiece has been created in the occasion’s honour, the Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary.
The world famous beagle plays a prominent role within the timepiece, first appearing as an embossed silver medallion on the blue subdial at 9 o’clock reproducing the silver pin that NASA astronauts give to award recipients. The dial itself is also silver and laser-engraved with Ag925. It includes two more blue subdials, as well as blue PVD angle-shaped hour markers and hands.
On the caseback, Snoopy goes into orbit on his black and white Command and Service Module (CSM) placed on a sweeping hand that activates when the chronograph seconds hand is in use. This way, Snoopy takes a trip around the moon whose surface is decorated on the sapphire crystal using a unique micro-structured metallisation. In the distance, the Earth disc rotates once per minute, in sync with the watch’s small seconds hand. The quote “Eyes on the Stars” follows Snoopy in his trip.
The NAIAD LOCK keeps all caseback engravings in the correct, upright position, including the date in 1970 that Omega received the Silver Snoopy Award, as well as a tribute to the imperilled Apollo 13 mission that same year.
The watch is powered by the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861 which represented a major milestone for the famous Moonwatch movement. Now crafted with Co-Axial technology and a stop- second function, the hand-wound Calibre 3861 is resistant to magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss and Master Chronometer certified ensuring the highest standards of precision, chronometric performance and magnetic resistance. It has an autonomy of 50 hours when fully wound.
Fitted with a blue nylon fabric strap matching the other blue elements of the watch, and featuring the trajectory of the Apollo 13 mission embossed on the lining, the Omega Speedmaster “Silver Snoopy Award” 50th Anniversary ref. 310.32.42.50.02.001 is not a limited edition and comes in a special Apollo 13 presentation box, with a microfiber cleaning cloth, a brochure, and a magnifying glass to help you get up close to the details. Its retail prices is Euro 9,700 (including VAT) / US$ 9,600 (excluding sales taxes). omegawatches.com
