In 2019, Moritz Grossmann introduced its first automatic watch, the ATUM Hamatic, available in two variations, in rose gold and white gold with silver opaline dials.
The German brand recently presented a new and limited edition of the Hamatic that combines a 41 mm x 11.35 mm white gold case with a vintage style dial featuring a new and exclusive finish.
The surface of the new dial was first painted in a black-anthracite colour. The mirror-polished background on a German silver base was then treated with a finish called ‘black or’, which created a shiny black surface against which large Roman numerals in white form stand out. The vintage ‘M. Grossmann’ logo from 1875 and handcrafted polished hands measuring a mere 0.1 mm wide are an homage to the old pocket watches of Moritz Grossmann.
The Hamatic features a modern interpretation of an older-generation device: a pendulum mass, referred to as an automatic hammer mechanism (hence the name of the model that combines HAMmer and automATIC).
Visible through the display back, a bi-directional hammer with a heavy gold head sits on a fine stem converting even the smallest movement into winding power.
The hammer’s centre of mass is further away from its rotational axis than with a central rotor. This results in a high torque, which in turn caters for powerful winding. Thanks to the special ratchet mechanism, hammer movements from just five degrees can be used to wind the mainspring.
When fully wound, the 3 Hz (21,600 vph) Calibre 106.0 movement guarantees a power reserve of 72 hours.
Through the interplay of the hammer body together with head and spring, the automatic hammer mechanism works in both directions. A sapphire roller transfers the oscillation between hammer spring and hammer body.
Intricately crafted end springs in the hammer frame attenuate and limit deflections in case of excessive deflections.
In order to convert the energy into a continuous rotary motion, the oscillations of the hammer body are picked up by two click levers. The two-way direction of rotation of the click wheels ensures an even rotary motion, which is transferred to the free wheel via the reduction wheel and then to the ratchet wheel in the mainspring barrel.
The watch can also be wound by hand in addition to the self-winding mechanism. To achieve this, a manual winder designed as a yoke winder is mounted on a separate bridge. The yoke ensures that the manual winder is always uncoupled from the ratchet wheel when the Hamatic system is active in response to motion. In manual winding mode, the reduction gear is isolated from the ratchet wheel by the click-pawl idler.
