Launched in November 2019 in a stainless steel version, the Gravity Equal Force represented an important step for Swiss manufacture Armin Strom.
In fact, this model marked the launch of System 78, a new collection that is aimed to create Haute Horlogerie timepieces at competitive prices for watch connoisseurs and collectors.

The System 78 collection is now adding a new member with the Gravity Equal Force in rose gold, a variation that emphasises the contemporary elegance of this refined model.
Maintaining the same measures of the steel version (41 mm in diameter and 12.65 mm of height), the new version combines an 18ct rose gold case to an off-set black dial of great refinement with manually finished rose gold hour and minute hands that stand out beautifully and a small snailed sub-dial to display the running seconds.
The plate is black too, offering a striking contrast to the movement components visible on the dial side that are held in place by the eye-catching triplet of rose gold bridges: from top to bottom, the unidirectionally winding micro-rotor, the time adjustment wheels, and the mainspring barrel integrating the "equal force" technical solution.
Water resistant up to a pressure of 3 bar (approximately 30 metres / 100 feet), the case introduces several new details that contribute to the distinctive look of the timepiece: a slim bezel that leaves space to the dial, the restylised small "lip" positioned on the bezel at 6 o’clock (a hallmark of the brand), the angular lugs and the large crown.
Technically speaking, the watch is not less appealing than aesthetically.
Held in place by the lower bridge, the barrel integrates a new solution that helps transmitting equal force - hence the name of the model - to the balance, thus increasing the consistency of rate. This solution pursues the same goals of complications like the fusée-chain transmission or the constant force escapement in a different way.
Inside the mainspring barrel, a stop-works declutch system operates to limit the torque delivered to the balance, smoothly distributing power. This is the first time that a solution like this is implemented in a self-winding movement.
As you can see in the video below, a Geneva wheel (aka Maltese cross) mounted to the barrel housing cover limits the rotation of the mainspring barrel to just 9 full turns out of a possible 12.5 taking advantage of the central 72% of the mainspring’s potential torque curve, the most consistent portion. As the barrel housing unwinds around the arbor, a pin counts the rotations on the Geneva wheel until it reaches the locked position and prevents further unwinding.
Thanks to this ingenious system, the power delivery to the balance is always as consistent as possible.
It is remarkable that, even without taking advantage of the full mainspring, the Armin Strom manufacture Calibre ASB19 still delivers a power reserve of 72 hours or 3 days.
A creative and playful detail, on the barrel cover you can notice a power reserve indicator whose position continuously changes as the watch is wound.
When turning the watch, the sapphire crystal case back reveals the superior finishes of the movement. The central inscription remarks that the ASB19 calibre was designed and manufactured in house by Armin Strom, adjusted in all positions and fitted with 28 jewels. The balance wheel with 4 regulating screws beats steadily at the frequency of 3,5 Hz (25,200 vibrations per hour).
