The young Remy decided that becoming a watchmaker was his path when he was 11 year old, after visiting a Swiss watch company in La Vallée de Joux. In 2012, he joined a watchmaking school located next to the Swiss border in Morteau (France) and two years later he was awarded as one of the best watchmaking apprentices of France. In these years, he designed and produced a tourbillon table clock, entirely by hand. In 2018, Remy was the winner of the Young Talent Competition organized by François Paul Journe.
In 2019, he created his own workshop on the shores of lake Annecy, very near to Geneva. The workshop was equipped with old watchmaking tools and machines that he had started purchasing and restoring since he was 15 years old, thus also demonstrating a remarkable planning capability.
Remy Cools has now presented his first creation, the Tourbillon Souscription, an evolution of his school watch.
Smaller and thinner, the movement, the case and dial have been reworked while maintaining a clear link to the model created during the school years.
Crafted from the stainless steel, the 40 mm case frames a silver and hand engraved dial where the tourbillon and dial bridges take centre stage, further emphasised by the height - 7 mm - of the domed sapphire glass. The total height of the watch is 15 mm.
15.5 mm in diameter, the tourbillon is made of hardened black polish steel with a specific balance wheel and hand-made hairspring with breguet overcoil.
The sub-dial indicating the time is finely micro-blasted while the two hour and minute rings are circle brushed. The hands are black polished, blued and mounted on a steel polished chaton.
On the back, the two sapphire glasses display the beveled wheels and other details of the hand-wound movement. The watch has no crown on the caseband as it features two stainless steel crowns that can be used for winding and setting the time. A position locking system protects them from accidental use.
All components are hand finished. Black polishes, beveled edges and engravings create a nice contrast with the microblasted elements. Slow beating at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour, the movement has a power reserve of 36 hours.
