In the last few years, Panerai invested a lot in terms of research and development in the field of high-tech materials. And not just for technical reasons. In fact, these innovative materials can often enhance the appearance of a watch.
This is the case of the new Luminor Marina DMLS 44 mm PAM01662 that combines DMLS titanium and Carbotech.
Very light yet extremely resilient, the case of this model is made of titanium and obtained using the Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technology, a futuristic 3D printing process by which titanium powder, sintered by a high power fiber optic laser, takes a solid shape that grows 30 microns (0.03 mm) at a time.
First introduced in 2015, Carbotech is a composite material based on carbon fibre whose uneven, matt black appearance varies according the cutting of the material making each example of this watch a unique piece. Compared to ceramics and titanium, carbotech is even lighter as well as being hypoallergenic and not subject to corrosion.
The 44 mm DMLS case of the PAM01662 is enriched by the use of Carbotech for the bezel, crown and lever of the Safety Lock crown protection bridge.
The unpolished anthracite dial with tone-on-tone Super-LumiNova indexes and numerals, emphasises the monochrome look of the watch.
The watch is powered by the in-house designed and manufactured P.9010 calibre. Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, this automatic movement offers three days of power reserve delivered by two spring barrels. It is equipped with a rapid time adjustment function that also changes the date.
Waterproof up to 30 bar (about 300 meters / 1,000 feet deep), the new Panerai Luminor Marina 44 mm PAM01662 is matched to a black Panerai Sportech strap with anthracite stitching. A second technical rubber strap, in black, completes the package, together with a specific screwdriver for its removal and for replacing the buckle. Its retail price is Euro 15,000. panerai.com
