The dials of worldtime watches can often be a bit over-crowded having to display 24 time zones. For those rare models that offer up to 35 different time zones instead of the usual 24, maintaining a good readability is even more challenging.
In this segment, the Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite provides an outstanding solution.
In fact, it displays the time in two zones at once (home time and destination time) offering a choice of 35 world time zones in a very elegant way which makes it possible to have a dial with a clean design without crowding it with the names of many towns.
And, above all, the setting of the destination time is very simple, hiding all the complexity of the mechanism in the manufacture movement.
The latest version of this successful model from the Saxon watchmaker comes in a stainless steel case framing a high-contrast dial in striking midnight blue.
Compared to the stainless version with white dial that we reviewed in 2018, the new version further enhances legibility for the wearer.
The new, sword-shaped hour and minute hands are clearly set off from the galvanic, midnight blue dial with its sunray finish. Equally easy to read are the numerals, details and lettering printed in white on the different displays. The twelve rod index appliques complete the high- contrast design. The central hands and the hour appliques are generously treated with white Super-LumiNova for increased visibility even in poor light conditions.
Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vph), the manufactory's automatic Calibre 89-02 movement with 72-hour power reserve makes it possible to display the time of day in two time zones at once, freeing the wearer from the need to calculate the time difference.
A time zone ring offers a choice of all 35 world time zones currently in use, each of them displayed using an official IATA location code representing an international airport in the relevant time zone.
The 24 time zones that are offset from Greenwich Mean Time by a full hour are represented by an IATA code in white. Further eight time zones with half-hour offsets and the three time zones with three-quarter hour offsets are indicated by an IATA code in light blue.
The two windows at 8 o'clock allow the wearer to set summer time (Daylight Saving Time - DST) and standard time (Standard Time - STD), and day/night indicators for both home and destination (local time) can be read at a glance.
Any necessary adjustments of the date while traveling forward or back in time, i.e. to the east or west respectively, are handled by the movement.
The central hour and minute hands indicate the local time. The other indications are efficiently arranged: home time display with related day/night indicator and power reserve at 12 o'clock, the local time day/night indicator with a small sun and stylised night sky at 9 o’clock, small seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock, and the signature Panorama Date at 4 o'clock.
The 44 mm stainless steel case alternates polished and satin-brushed finishes.
