Panerai celebrates 70 years since the invention of the Luminor with the introduction of two references with exceptional luminosity, the Luminor Marina PAM01117 and Luminor Marina Carbotech PAM01118. In 1949 Panerai introduced a new self-luminous substance called Luminor which was not only safer than radium-based Radiomir but also more luminous. The new tritium (hydrogen isotope) based compound was patented on 11 January 1949 under the "Luminor" trademark.
70 years later, Panerai celebrates that milestone with the introduction of two references with exceptional luminosity, the Luminor Marina PAM01117 and Luminor Marina Carbotech PAM01118.
Visibility is enhanced by the use of Super-LumiNova of the latest generation. But in these models it is not applied to hour markers and hands only but extended to the decal on the dial, the rehaut and even to the crown, the crown protecting bridge and its lever, and the stitchings on the strap.
The Luminor Marina PAM01117 comes in a micro-sandblasted titanium case that is 44 mm in diameter and 15.65 mm thick. The imposing case is manufactured using a technology known as Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS), a process of futuristic 3D printing involving the sedimentation of titanium powder, sintered layer by layer by a high-powered optical fibre laser, 30 microns (0.03 mm) at a time. The total weight of the watch, including the strap, is 100 grams.
The blue dial has a sunray finish and sandwich structure, with small seconds at 9 o’clock and date at 3 o’clock.
The 44 mm x 14.50 mm case of the Panerai Luminor Marina Carbotech PAM01118 is crafted from Carbotech, a compound consisting of thin layers of carbon fibres superimposed on each other, orientated alternately (seven layers per millimeter), fused together under high-pressure temperature-controlled conditions, and finally further consolidated with an advanced polymer. It offers great lightness and resistance to stress and corrosion.
Just like for the PAM01117, the dial of the PAM01118 has a sunray finish and sandwich structure, with small seconds at 9 o’clock and date at 3 o’clock, but in this case the colour is black to harmonise with the case colour.
Both models are powered by the P.9010 calibre, designed and manufactured by Panerai in Neuchâtel. This automatic movement beats at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) with an autonomy of three days provided by two spring barrels whose springs are wound by an oscillating weight operating in both directions. The hours can be conveniently adjusted without interfering with the movement of the minute hand, thanks to the device which directly moves only the relative hand in jumps of one hour forward or backwards. This function is very useful when changing time zones or moving between summer time and winter time, and conveniently the adjustment of the hour hand is automatically connected to the date indicator.
Confident in the technical and mechanical reliability of its timepieces, Panerai guarantees the Luminor Marina 44 mm for 70 years, as remarked with the engraving on the 12-sided screw back. Throughout this period Panerai will maintain the good working order of the client’s watch as necessary under the terms and conditions of the International warranty.
Water-resistant to 30 bar (a depth of about 300 metres / 1,000 feet), the new Luminor Marina PAM0117 and Luminor Marina Carbotech PAM0118 are fitted with blue or black straps made of Panerai Sportech, woven to give a waterproof rubberised effect, with luminous stitching and a Velcro fastener. A second rubber strap with a titanium tongue buckle is also supplied, together with a tool for changing the strap and a special box with a luminous stylised representation of the dial.

I really don't mind them but still think that Panerai watches are better in steel.
