2020 marks the 60th anniversary from Grand Seiko and the Japanese brand has prepared several novelties to celebrate the important achievement.
Among them, the new Grand Seiko 60th Anniversary Limited Edition stands out for featuring the new Caliber 9SA5, an entirely new movement that will be the foundation upon which a whole new generation of Grand Seiko mechanical watches will be created.
Grand Seiko is presenting this new fast-beating movement as the finest mechanical caliber that they have ever created. In developing it, the Grand Seiko development team set out to deliver the same level of stable accuracy as that of their existing 36,000 vph movement but to deliver a longer power reserve making it more practical in everyday life.
As the result, the Caliber 9SA5 has a precision rate of +5 to –3 seconds a day and a power reserve of 80 hours.
The new in-house developed dual impulse escapement enables the escapement wheel to transmit power directly to the balance, leading to an efficiency increase. One of its peculiarities is that, in one direction, power is transmitted directly to the balance while in the other it is via the pallet fork, as in a traditional escapement. A new free-sprung balance was specifically developed for this caliber for enhanced precision and resistance to shock and friction.
The two barrels, arranged in sequence, improved the power reserve while also provide enough energy to make the date change instantaneous.
At just just 5.18 mm, the new caliber is also 15% slimmer than the current Grand Seiko Hi-Beat caliber thanks to the innovative horizontal layout of the barrel and gear trains.
The Grand Seiko 60th Anniversary Limited Edition maintains the design code that makes Grand Seiko watches immediately recognizable while also introducing some novelties like the slightly wider lugs or the increased volume of the hour hand and the hour markers.
The 18k yellow gold case has a diameter of 40 mm and is 11.7 mm thick. It offers water resistance to 100 metres / 330 feet. The silver dial is protected by a high definition box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.
Visible through the screw see-through case back, the new movement is beautifully finished. The bridge has a gently curving outline that is inspired by the shapes of Mount Iwate and a bend in the Shizukuishi River that runs near the studio where the watch is made.
Matched to a crocodile strap with a yellow gold three-fold clasp and produced in a limited edition of 100, the new Grand Seiko 60th Anniversary Limited Edition ref. SLGH002 will be available at the Grand Seiko Boutiques in August 2020 at an indicative price of Euro 45,000 / US$ 43,000. grand-seiko.com
