To celebrate its 160th anniversary in 2020, TAG Heuer is introducing today the new Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition. The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition (ref. CBK221B.FC6479) will be produced in a limited edition of only 1860 pieces with a price of Euro 5,850 / US$ 6,450.
Founded as Heuer in 1860, and renamed TAG Heuer in 1985, the Swiss brand has played a key role in taking watchmaking to new levels of accuracy and performance (you can read the complete history of the brand here).
To celebrate its 160th anniversary in 2020, TAG Heuer is introducing today the new Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition characterized by a design that dates back to 1960s but powered by a highly innovative in-house developed chronograph movement, the Heuer 02.
Launched in 1963, the Carrera took its name from the legendary week-long "Carrera Panamericana" road race held in Mexico and was designed for drivers with ergonomics and legibility as priorities. It quickly became an international success and one of the most famous wristwatches of the brand.
The 1964 model known as "2447S", with its monochrome silver dial featuring three azurage counters, was the inspiration for this celebrative timepiece.
Water-resistant to 100 metres / 330 feet, the polished case with round pushers has a diameter of 39 mm instead of the original 36 mm. Another difference is evident in the dial with the running seconds register positioned at 6 o’clock, and not at 9 o’clock, due to the different architecture of today’s Heuer 02 movement compared to the old Valjoux 72 from 1963.
The central hour and minute hands are not flat but facetted and coated with beige Super-LumiNova. Protected by a domed sapphire crystal, the dial is completed by printed HEUER shield and Carrera name.
The case back is engraved with “One of 1860” and “LIMITED EDITION” and fitted with a transparent sapphire crystal to display the Calibre Heuer 02 manufacture movement. Comprised of 168 components and beating at 4 Hz (28,800 vph), this movement includes a column wheel and a vertical clutch: the first contributes to more accurate and precise functionality – noticeable through the smooth impulse when manipulating the pushers - while the second improves the precision of the start-and-stop functions as well as the running of the chronograph second hand to ensure that there is no loss of time when using the chronograph function.
The redesigned oscillating weight, visible through the screwed-down sapphire crystal, is adorned with a lacquer-filled engraving that distinguishes the timepiece as an anniversary edition.
Available worldwide to customers from June 2020 and presented on a black alligator strap, the TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Silver Limited Edition (ref. CBK221B.FC6479) will be produced in a limited edition of only 1860 pieces – a nod to the year that Heuer was founded – with a price of Euro 5,850 / US$ 6,450. tagheuer.com

One of my favourite 2020 novelties so far. Well done TAG Heuer.
