MB&F presented the Legacy Machine Perpetual in a 25-piece limited edition characterized by a vivid blue dial framed by a yellow gold case. The new MB&F LM Perpetual in yellow gold with blue dial has a price of Swiss Francs 158,000 / Euro 147,000 / US$ 167,000.
First launched by MB&F in 2015 in red gold and platinum editions, followed by white gold and titanium versions, the Legacy Machine Perpetual is now also available in a 25-piece limited edition characterised by a vivid blue dial framed by a 44 mm yellow gold case.
Differently from many perpetual calendars that are built as modules fitted on top of an existing movement, the LM Perpetual is driven by a fully integrated 581-component calibre that was developed from the ground up for optimal efficiency.
An example can help to understand the benefits of this approach. Traditional perpetual calendar mechanisms use a 31-day month as the default and basically "delete" superfluous dates for the months with fewer days – by fast-forwarding through the redundant dates during changeover. A traditional perpetual calendar changing from February 28 to March 1 scrolls quickly through the 29th, 30th and 31st to arrive at the 1st.
The LM Perpetual uses a patented “mechanical processor” instead of the conventional space-consuming grand levier (big lever) system architecture. The mechanical processor utilises a default 28-day month and adds extra days as required. This means that each month always has the exact number of days required; there is no fast-forwarding or skipping redundant days.
Other benefits are the simplified adjustment of the leap year thanks to a dedicated quickset pusher and, to avoid possible problems to the mechanism, the automatic deactivation of the adjuster pushers when the calendar changes.
The full complication is displayed on the dial side, underneath the 14 mm suspended balance that beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour with a 72-hour power reserve.
The hours and minutes subdial is placed at 12 o’clock, between the elegant arches of the balance. The other indications are: day of the week at 3 o’clock, power reserve indicator at 4 o’clock, month at 6 o’clock, retrograde leap year indicator at 7 o’clock, and date at 9 o’clock.
Through the sapphire crystal case back, it is possible to appreciate the meticulous hand finishing with internal bevel angles, polished bevels, Geneva waves and hand-made engravings.
