Our review of the Hands-on Review: Eberhard 1887 Remontage Manuel. Stylish and refined, the Eberhard 1887 Remontage Manuel Ref. 21028 has a price of Swiss Francs 3,640 with the silk strap or Swiss Francs 3,720 with the alligator leather strap, in line with the quality of the watch and its movement.
In the last two years, Eberhard celebrated several important events. In 2018, the Swiss brand returned to the historic headquarters in La Chaux-de-Fonds, in one of the most recognizable buildings of the town. In June of this year, in the same building, Eberhard inaugurated the Museum dedicated to the brand, a move that emphasized the continuity of the company over time. On the occasion, the original eagle positioned on top of the building by the company's founder, Georges-Lucien Eberhard, returned in its place after undergoing a long restoration process.
To complete the celebrations, Eberhard has recently presented a new three-hand timepiece, called 1887 Remontage Manuel, that is a tribute to the founding date of the Maison and the town where the it was originally founded.
This elegant wristwatch comes in a 41.80 mm stainless steel case that is water resistant to 30 metres / 100 feet. Its lines are highlighted by the alternation of polished and satin-brushed surfaces. The slim bezel to frames a classical dial available in two variations: with gold or rhodium-plated numbers and indices.
For our hands-on review, we used the version with golden Roman numerals, rhomboidal indices and Dauphine hands. These elements, together with the blue central seconds hand, stand out against the beautifully refined dial decorated with a "clou de Paris" small checkerboard pattern.
Protected by a slightly domed sapphire crystal glass, the dial is rich in detail. The retro-style date window at 6 o'clock has a trapezoidal shape that was directly inspired to some historical models of the brand. The logo on the dial, that includes the name of the town where the brand was founded, is also part of the historical heritage and is well documented in the archives of the early 1900s. Legibility is further enhanced by the outer railway-track chapter ring.
The Eberhard 1887 Remontage Manuel is just 9.60 mm thick so it easily slips under any shirt cuff. Great comfort on the wrist in ensured by the ergonomically shaped lugs and the soft Jacquard silk strap whose colours are matched to those of the dial produced exclusively for Eberhard by the Ulturale tie-maker, a renowned ambassador of this historic Neapolitan sartorial tradition. Of course, if you prefer a more traditional look, the watch is also available with an alligator leather strap.
The new Calibre EB140 can be admired through a screwed exhibition glass back.
Entirely produced for Eberhard in La Chaux-de-Fonds, this hand-wound movement has beautiful finishes with blued screws, gilded engravings and “circular wave” pattern decorations for the balance wheel and the gear train bridges. Beating at a frequency 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), this movement offers a 40-hour power reserve.
