Eberhard recently presented a new version of its Nuvolari Legend chronograph. The special link between Eberhard and Tazio Nuvolari started almost 30 years ago when the Swiss brand based in La Chaux-de-Fonds decided to tribute the legendary racing driver with an exclusive watch collection bearing his name.
The new Nuvolari Legend "The Brown Helmet" is characterized by a dial in a warm "antique leather" nuance that nicely harmonizes with the vintage look of the watch and, in particular, of its dial that recalls the first pocket and wrist chronographs produced by Eberhard at the beginning of the last century.
The colour was inspired by the natural leather accessories so much loved by the champion: a vest that protected him from the wind and a soft helmet which also succeeded in suppressing some of the noise produced by the automobiles of the time. These objects are now exhibited at the Nuvolari Museum in Mantova, together with the twin of the pocket watch by Eberhard that Nuvolari always carried with him.
Crafted from stainless steel and satin-finished, the 43 mm case of the new watch is completed by rectangular push buttons and a large screw-in crown personalized with the “E”.
Protected by a sapphire crystal with antireflective coating on the inner side, the dial has luminescent Arabic numerals and hands and features a minutes counter at 12 o’clock, a hours counter at 6 o’clock and a spiral tachometer scale in km/hr in the centre.
The transparent caseback showcases the 4 Hz Eberhard movement (base Valjoux 7750) enhanced with Côtes de Genève finish, golden engravings and an oscillating weight decorated with a stylised reproduction of the Alfa Romeo Type 12C, a car which Nuvolari drove to victory many times.
