Panerai is presenting the Radiomir California 47 mm (PAM00931), a new interpretation characterized by the combination of Roman numerals and Arabic figures standing out against a gold dial tinged in the tones of shaded brown. The new Panerai Radiomir California 47mm PAM00931 has a price of Euro 8,500.
In 1935 the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai and other watch manufacturers with the request of designing a watch resistant to extreme conditions while at the same time keeping exact time for the frogman commandos of the First Submarine Group Command and offering excellent readability even under water.
The prototype submitted by Panerai in 1936 was called Radiomir, from the name of the luminescent substance used for hands and indices, and passed all tests successfully.
The Florentine brand won the order of the Royal Italian Navy and, following an extensive secret test phase, the first lot of watches, identified by the reference 3646, were supplied as of 1938 (read more about this in our "History of the Panerai Luminor").
Inspired to that early reference, Panerai is presenting the Radiomir California 47 mm PAM00931, a new interpretation characterized by the combination of Roman numerals, Arabic figures and hour markers standing out against a gold dial tinged in the tones of shaded brown.
Just like in the original, there is no reference to the maker on the dial, a fundamental condition for an instrument which at the time was covered by military secrecy.
To be completely consistent with the original, the new watch has a Plexiglas crystal.
The 47 mm case is made of AISI 316L stainless steel, for the first time with a finishing deposited on it which emulates the effects of wear over time.
The hands are also crafted from steel, but in this case they are flame-blued at a controlled temperature of between 290°C and 300°C.
Beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, the P.3000 hand-wound in-house movement has a power reserve of three days supplied by two spring barrels in series, and it displays hours and minutes. It is equipped with an Incabloc anti-shock device.
Water-resistant to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 metres / 330 feet) and completed by an oiled calf “Tuscan leather” strap with trapezoid buckle in AISI 316L stainless steel with aged patina effect, the new Panerai Radiomir California 47mm PAM00931 has a price of Euro 8,500. panerai.com
