Launched by Urban Jürgensen in 2017 in a 42 mm-diameter version, the Alfred was received enthusiastically by many watch connoisseurs because it combines the excellence of traditional watchmaking craftsmanship with a distinctive contemporary touch. The result is a wristwatch that can be at ease with an elegant suit just like with a causal fit (you can read our review here).
Following the requests of collectors and haute horlogerie lovers, the brand is now introducing The Alfred 40 that features a smaller 40 mm stainless steel case as well as a new folding stainless-steel clasp and buffalo leather strap.
All of the other features are the same for both models.
Named in tribute to Jacques Alfred Jürgensen, the last watchmaker of the Jurgensen family, the Alfred 40 features a stylish case with teardrop shape lugs that makes each Urban Jürgensen watch immediately recognizable. Each lug is individually forged, meticulously hand-finished and soldered to the watch case in a way which makes the soldering lines invisible to the naked eye.
Other details that add beauty to this case are the finely polished convex bezel framing a domed sapphire crystal and the recessed, fluted crown engraved with the Urban Jürgensen logo.
The polished steel of the case is matched to a precious “grenage” dial, a traditional, time-consuming technique that aims at obtaining a silvery, frosted surface with remarkable depth and granularity from a single piece of solid silver.
Numerals and other inscriptions on the dial are engraved and the recesses are filled with lacquer. The dial is then brushed to remove the excess of material and to smooth its surface using powders, salts, and oil which makes each dial unique.
The elegance of the dial is paired with distinctive hands, entirely handcrafted and finished with thermally blued steel arms and the mirror-polished, and slightly asymmetrical, eye of the hour hand, which gives the final touch. Producing a single set of these hands requires at least 50 manufacturing steps and over a day of work.
The watch is powered by the Urban Jürgensen Caliber P4 with manual winding. Displaying small seconds at 6 o’clock, this twin barrel calibre runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour with 72 hours of power reserve.
The beautiful finishes of the P4 calibre and its openworked balance bridge are visible through the exhibition case-back: Geneva stripes radiating from the balance wheel, perlage, hand-made chamfering, polished jewel sinks and recesses, and thermally blued screws.
