On occasion of the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix that will take place on September the 22nd, Richard Mille is presenting the RM 50-04 Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph Kimi Raikkonen alongside its partner.
With this new exclusive timepiece, the Swiss brand pays homage to both the driver, a F1 World Champion, and his current team, the Alfa Romeo Racing Team.
The Calibre RM 50-04 developed for this model is extremely sophisticated being fitted with a split-seconds chronograph tourbillon and a grade-5 titanium and Carbon TPT movement that weighs just 7 grams thanks to its fine skeletonisation.
To combine these complications within a single mechanism required perfect transmission of energy to ensure faultless operation. The need to reduce friction led the research team to improve the profile of the teeth on the barrel and the second wheel pinion.
This high-tech calibre is equipped with the latest-generation split-seconds mechanism developed by the Richard Mille engineers.
The new column wheel operates the different levers of the split-seconds function and optimises the chronograph's operation. While previous Richard Mille chronographs have traditionally featured a wheel with 8 columns, the one equipping the RM 50-04 now only has 6 columns to ensure optimised simultaneous movement, maximal function locking, and greater adjustment durability.
Measuring 44.50 x 49.65 x 16.10 mm, the case is made of Quartz TPT and Carbon TPT and uses the same colours of the Alfa Romeo C38 single-seater. The unique look of the white Quartz TPT material is achieved by interlaying 600 layers of silicon each 45 microns thick and impregnating them with a white matrix before heating them to 120 °C in an autoclave. This process gives the material a very high resistance/weight ratio, non-allergenic properties, and excellent resistance to UV rays.
Developed by North Thin Ply Technology, the technique is also used on the Carbon TPT middle, but this time using carbon fibres.
Red echoes can also be seen within the movement, particularly on the Carbon TPT flange, the chronograph counters, and the power-reserve, torque and function indicators.
The grade-5 titanium dial also includes the number 7, which is worn by Kimi in competition. The combination of these technical solutions gives this complex piece exceptional resistance, tested in-house with impacts of 5,000 g’s.
The 70-hour power reserve indicator at 11 o'clock is visually balanced by the torque indicator at 2 o'clock which supplies information about the mainspring’s tension, permitting an optimisation of the movement’s chronometric functioning. Below 53 Nmm (Newton millimeter), the spring is considered too slack, while above 65 Nmm, excess tension in the spring can adversely affect the mechanism’s operation, or actually endanger it.
In a manner similar to a car’s gearbox, the function indicator at 4 o'clock makes it possible to see the winding (W), neutral (N) and hand-setting (H) positions as the crown is pulled out.

ReplyDeleteThe Kimi Raikkonen (RM50-04) is a model variation of the RM50-03 so they are almost the same watches although materials, colours and some other design details are different.
