The flagship of the Ingenieur family, the IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month, is now available in a titanium case that highlights its cutting-edge look.
The design of the classic round case of the Ingenieur is inspired by the first generations of Ingenieur models from the 1950s and 1960s but its large size and the unconventional dial speak loud of a contemporary timepiece.
Measuring an imposing 45 millimetres in diameter with a thickness of 17.4 mm, the case is made of titanium with a polished bezel to frame the slate-coloured dial with black luminescent hands. Fitted with a screw-down crown, the watch is water resistant to 120 metres / 400 feet.
Features include a perpetual calendar with large double-digit displays for both the date and month, a leap year display at 6 o'clock integrated in the small seconds sub-dial and a flyback chronograph with hours and minutes counter at 12 o'clock.
The IWC-manufactured 89801-calibre movement beats at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and offers a power reserve of 60 hours. The rotor of the automatic winding system is made of solid 18-carat gold and can be seen through the transparent sapphire glass back.
The perpetual calendar mechanism consists of 185 individual parts. The energy required to advance the month display discs is built up continuously throughout the month by a quick-action switch. A spring-loaded lever on the quick-action switch is lifted a tiny bit further each day by a cam. At the end of the month, the energy is released and the quick-action switch jumps instantaneously to its starting position and advances both of the month display discs individually, or together, by one position, depending on the month. On 31 December, the leap year disc is also advanced at the same time.
