Introduced at Baselworld 2017 in red gold and platinum and followed by titanium versions in 2018, the Insight Micro-Rotor by Romain Gauthier is now available in three 10-piece limited editions housed in white gold cases with white, black or blue oven-fired enamel dials.
As the "Insight" name suggests, this time-only model was designed with the intent to offer lot of views of its remarkable mechanics and fine finishing.
Hour, minute and small second indications are powered by a hand-finished, in-house manufactured 4 Hz calibre equipped with a bidirectional micro-rotor made from 22k solid gold.
The compact oscillating weight – visible dial side at 9 o'clock and through the display back – turns between two bridges, each fitted with a friction-minimising, wear-resistant ruby bearing. It winds a double mainspring barrel that, when fully wound, offers 80 hours of power.
Hand-frosted and then treated with 4.5N rose gold, the mainplate makes the straight-grained, palladium-treated bridges stand out thanks to its warm golden tone and matte finishing.
Through the display back it is possible to observe the train of gears in motion, starting with the reversing gear that lends the micro-rotor mechanism its bidirectionality.
Like the mainplate, the bridges on the back of the movement are 4.5N rose gold-treated and decorated with hand-frosting and hand-made, hand-polished bevels and jewel countersinks. These bridges are fixed in place using in-house screws that bear an aesthetic S-slot.
The gilded hue and frosted finish of the bridges contrast neatly with the rhodium-treated elements next to them: straight-grained, linear plaquettes; circular-grained gears and ratchets featuring bevelled, circular spokes; and the mainspring barrels of which the lids have been decorated with snailing.
With a case diameter of 39.5 mm, the Insight Micro-Rotor sits comfortably on the wrist. The crown positioned at 2 o’clock contributes to the wearing comfort by freeing up space for wrist movement.
Interesting detail the demonstrates the care for detail of Romain Gauthier, the bombé sapphire crystal has its highest point over the hour-minute display, considered the real centre of the dial.
