Jaeger-LeCoultre is unveiling the new Master Grande Tradition Répétition Minutes Perpétuelle that features an innovative gong system that replicates the richness and strength of antique sonnerie pocket watches. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Répétition Minutes Perpétuelle comes in two 30-pèiece limited editions: with a neoclassical silver-grained dial (ref. Q5233420) or with a deep blue translucent guilloché enamel dial (ref. Q52334E1) that is produced by hand in the Atelier des Métiers Rares. Prices: Euro 225,000 + local taxes and Euro 240,000 + local taxes, respectively.
Jaeger-LeCoultre has a unique tradition in the manufacturing of chiming watch calibres being the only manufacture in the world to have produced more than 200 movements of this type in its history.
Following the success of the Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon Westminster Perpétuel that was presented at SIHH 2019, La Grande Maison is unveiling the new Master Grande Tradition Répétition Minutes Perpétuelle that features an innovative gong system that replicates the richness and strength of antique sonnerie pocket watches.
The research and innovation team of Jaeger-LeCoultre have achieved what they consider the "ideal chime" by creating an entirely new gong configuration. Instead of lying flat in overlapping coils like the most commonly seen minute repeater gongs, these gongs have a three-dimensional structure. Welded together at their base, they make one near-complete tour around the periphery of the movement before arching upwards, traversing the entire height of the new calibre. They then diverge and take a terminal semi-arc around the other side of the movement, stopping just before their ends meet.
Thanks to this approach that maximises the space occupied by the vibrating gongs, the calibre 950 exploits the sound transmission to the maximum. This is further amplified by the proximity of the gongs to a larger portion of the case which acts as a resonator.
The Master Grande Tradition Répétition Minutes Perpétuelle also integrates a perpetual calendar, one of the most useful mechanical complications that can be incorporated into a timepiece. It is conveniently matched to an automatic movement which makes its maintenance easier if the watch is worn regularly.
The winding rotor of the calibre 950 is hidden within the movement, positioned between the perpetual calendar and minute repeater mechanisms, in order to a have full view on the mechanism at the back of the watch. The Master Grande Tradition Répétition Minutes Perpétuelle is thus continuously supplied with energy without the need to obscure a single finely finished component, whether chamfered, satin-finished, or decorated with Côtes de Genève.
A small aperture on the dial, just near the axis of the hour and minute hands, reminds the wearer that the calendar indications should not be adjusted between 10PM and 1AM to avoid possible damages to the movement.
Despite the multiple complications and the automatic winding system, the Master Grande Tradition Répétition Minutes Perpétuelle is highly compact, with a diameter of 43 mm and a height of 13.72 mm. Crafted from white gol, the case comprises more than 80 separate hand-finished parts, polished, satin-finished or sandblasted.
