The latest iteration in this collection is the Grande Seconde Moon Swiss Serpentinite, a special edition incorporating rock fragments from the slopes of the Matterhorn, the pyramid-shaped giant of the Alps, and more specifically from a spot near the Hörnli Hut, the legendary base camp of the first ascent of the mountain in 1865.
The scaly-looking rock used for this fascinating dial is Serpentinite, the name originating from the similarity of its texture to that of the skin of a snake ('serpens' in Latin).

Preserving the aesthetic codes of the signature “8” design of the Grande Seconde model, Jaquet Droz placed the moon at the heart of the perpetual calendar located inside the large seconds hand dial, forming an appropriate link between date and Moon (since the two are correlated).
The dial is enriched by applied rings that, like the stars and the moon, are crafted from white gold.
For its Grande Seconde Moon, Jaquet Droz chose a so-called astronomical moon phase, requiring adjustment only once every 122 years and 46 days. Thanks to its carefully studied gear ratio, the specially developed "mechanism 135" is much more precise than a traditional 59-tooth model, which accumulates an error of one day in approximately two years, 7 months and 20 days.
The eye-catching composition is framed by a stainless steel 43 mm x 13.23 mm round case offering water resistance to 30 metres / 100 feet. The moon phase is set using a corrector positioned on the caseband at 8 o’clock.
Visible through the sapphire crystal case back, the self-winding Jaquet Droz 2660QL3 mechanical movement with silicon balance spring and pallet horns beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour). Its double barrel offers a power reserve of 68 hours.
