2019 marks more than just one anniversary for A. Lange & Söhne. Last week we wrote about the 25th anniversary of the Lange 1 and today, first day of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie of Geneva, we open our coverage from the exhibition with an exciting novelty that the Saxon brand released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Zeitwerk, their second most iconic timepiece (the first being the Lange 1).
Introduced in 2009, the Zeitwerk was Lange’s first mechanical wristwatch with constant-force escapement and precisely jumping digital displays indicating the hour and minute.
As the model turns 10, Lange expands the line with the Zeitwerk Date and its newly designed movement incorporating an additional function: a ring-shaped date display circling the dial and nicely integrated into the watch design.
The new Zeitwerk Date comes in a 44.2 mm white-gold case with a grey dial and a perfectly readable red date.
The circumferential date ring consists of glass with printed numerals from 1 to 31. The current date is displayed in red. To achieve this effect, a small colour segment beneath the date ring performs one step exactly at midnight.
Thanks to this clever arrangement, the date is always clearly legible at all times and also recognisable intuitively. The date display can be adjusted with the corrector at 8 o'clock; the switching impulse is generated when it is released.
The additional button at 4 o'clock independently advances the hour indication. This solution was needed because the time setting must be accurate to 24 hours and it would have taken too long to adjust the time via the crown – minute by minute. To enable the correction independently of the switching cycles of the movement, a clutch uncouples the hour ring from the jumping numerals mechanism each time the button is pressed.
Beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offering 72 hours of power reserve, the hand wound calibre L043.8 features the patented constant-force escapement which powers the balance with a uniform amount of force for the entire running duration while delivering the one-per-minute impulse for switching the three-disc jumping numerals display.
The sapphire-crystal caseback allows the owner to appreciate the engraved ratchet wheel, the filigreed remontoir bridge and the beautiful finishes of the 516-part movement.
