"The essence of Greubel Forsey in 39.6 mm": this is how the Swiss brand describes its latest creation, the Greubel Forsey Balancier Contemporain, developed with the goal of creating a moderately-sized timepiece with clear legibility and cutting-edge performance that could maintain all the Greubel Forsey signature characteristics and aesthetics.
"The essence of Greubel Forsey in 39.6 mm": this is how the Swiss brand describes its latest creation, presented at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2019 (Geneva, 14-17 January 2019).
A white gold 33-piece limited edition, the Greubel Forsey Balancier Contemporain was developed with the goal of creating a moderately-sized timepiece with clear legibility and cutting-edge performance that could maintain all the Greubel Forsey signature characteristics and aesthetics.
The 39.6 mm (diameter) x 12.21 mm (height) case is certainly a first from Greubel Forsey which generally produces much larger timepieces.
The new hand-wound movement is equipped with the large balance wheel (12.6 mm diameter) that was first introduced in 2017 with the Balancier limited edition model.
To enable fine adjustment of its moment of inertia, its balance rim is fitted with six gold mean-time screws, recessed in order to guarantee optimal aerodynamics by reducing air friction. The result is enhanced chronometric performance.
Comprising 225 components and finished in the Greubel Forsey tradition of absolute excellence, this movement is endowed with a 72-hour power reserve ensuring chronometric performance by means of two series-coupled fast-rotating barrels – one of which is equipped with a slipping spring to avoid excess tension.
The movement is also equipped with a crown-activated ‘stop balance’ system enabling timesetting to the nearest second.
The dial creatively plays with split levels as well as various materials and finishes.
The offset hours/minutes dial appears at 2 o’clock with its blued steel hands featuring hand-polished countersinks and flat-polished centres, along with its apertures revealing the exclusive Greubel Forsey balance wheel, gear train and three-dimensional tripod bridge. At 10 o’clock, on a slightly lower level, a finely hand-frosted bridge houses the power-reserve display with its slender blued steel hand.
The small seconds rotates between 8 and 9 o’clock, supported by a frosted and bevelled bridge providing a glimpse of the gilded barrel drum with Greubel Forsey engraving.
Finally, the exclusive balance wheel is prominently showcased at 6 o’clock set against the background of a mirror polished bridge.
Protected beneath a high-domed sapphire crystal, the caseback side of the new Balancier Contemporain demonstrates the exceptional craftsmanship of the brand.
The centre is occupied by an engraved circular red gold plate bearing the GF logo and the individual limited-edition number. It is surrounded by a white gold bridge, relief-engraved with the key Greubel Forsey values and black polished. The olive-domed jewels in gold chatons, with finely polished countersinks reflecting the deep red hue of the stones, complete the spectacular back side.
The Greubel Forsey Balancier Contemporain is fitted with a hand-sewn leather or alligator strap, secured by a white gold pin buckle hand-engraved with the Greubel Forsey logo. The price is Swiss Francs 199,000. greubelforsey.com
