Ressence Type 2. SIHH 2019. After introducing it as a concept watch at SIHH 2018, Ressence is now officially releasing the Type 2, the first mechanical wristwatch with a smart electronic crown, called e-Crown, which replaces the crown’s function by an automated time setup system. the Ressence Type 2 is available in two variations, anthracite dial (Type 2A) or grey dial (Type 2G), with a price of Swiss Francs 42,500.
After introducing it as a concept watch at SIHH 2018, Ressence is now officially releasing the Type 2, the first mechanical wristwatch with a smart electronic crown, called e-Crown, which replaces the crown’s function by an automated time setup system.
This way, the Belgian watchmaker continues the innovation path that started with its patented ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System), an in-house developed horological unit featuring an ever-changing dial where the "hands" are in fact markings on rotating discs within other discs.
As Ressence explains, the development of the e-Crown came down to one simple but fundamental question: "What if I could trust and rely on my mechanical watch as much as I do for my phone?"
e-Crown is represented on the dial by the selector sub disc and its four modes ("time zone 1", "time zone 2", "app" and "e-Crown off").
The time is manually set via the lever on the case back.
By double tapping the crystal, the manually set time is digitally registered by e-Crow. There is no need to think about checking and adjusting the watch anymore because e-Crown does it automatically. Even after three months of inactivity, once the watch is fastened to the wrist and the wearer taps the crystal, e-Crown will automatically set it to the right time.
The second time zone can be set the same way as the first one. Additionally, by selecting the "app" mode, the watch connects to the e-Crown app via Bluetooth, offering an easy way to choose from a list of time zones.
The Type 2 uses light energy to power the e-Crown. Photovoltaic cells (some hidden behind 10
micro-shutters on the dial) will use outside light as an energy source making the watch selfsufficient.
To save power, when the watch is not worn for more than 12 hours, eCrown will automatically hold the barrel of the 4 Hz self-winding mechanical movement. Once back on the wrist, e-Crown will release the barrel and Type 2 will start running again by double tapping the sapphire.

Housed in a 45 mm Grade 5 titanium case with anthracite PVD coating and water resistant to 1 ATM, the Ressence Type 2 is available in two variations, anthracite dial (Type 2A) or grey dial (Type 2G), with a price of Swiss Francs 42,500. ressencewatches.com
