IWC Schaffhausen will be showcasing its new Pilot’s Watches at the heart of the upcoming Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (Geneva, 14-17 January).
Together with the Chronograph Spitfire, Timezoner Spitfire and Top Gun Ceratanium models that we presented in the past days, there is another preview of the novelties that IWC will disclose at the exhibition: the Big Pilot’s Watch Constant-Force Tourbillon Edition "Le Petit Prince".
Limited to just 10 pieces, this is the first pilot's watch from IWC to feature a constant-force tourbillon. It is also the first IWC watch to feature a hard gold case, a special new version of red gold. The microstructure of the alloy is modified in a sophisticated manufacturing process becoming significantly harder and around 5 to 10 times more wear-resistant than conventional red gold.
Waterproof to 6 bar (60 meters / 200 feet), the 46.2 mm x 13.5 mm case frames a midnight blue dial, a distinctive feature of all the IWC watches dedicated to the French aviator and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and his most famous literary work, "The Little Prince" (Le Petit Prince).
This model features a patented constant-force mechanism integrated in a tourbillon to ensure an extremely precise rate.
The tourbillon - positioned at 9 o'clock - revolves around its own axis once every 60 seconds to offset the influence of gravity on any positional error in the balance and its adverse effect on the rate. Down in the depths of the tourbillon, we see the constant-force mechanism which separates the escapement from the direct flow of force from the dial train and with every second re-tensions a balance spring, which serves as a temporary store of energy and transfers absolutely even force pulses to the escape wheel.
Beating at 18,800 vibrations per hour, the IWC-manufactured calibre 94895 combines the constant-force tourbillon with a perpetual moon phase display, which takes 577.5 years to require adjustment by one day. The "Petit Prince" stands on the moon. Two barrels store enough power for 96 hours. A display notifies the wearer of the remaining power reserve.
