Gérald Genta (1931 - 2011) is widely acclaimed as one of the most influential watch designers of all time creating, among the others, timepieces like the Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet and the Nautilus by Patek Philippe.
Gérald Genta also founded his own brand in 1969, developing prestigious complication watches that contributed to the watchmaking renaissance that started in the 1980s.
Bulgari acquired the Gérald Genta brand in 2000 and, with it, an exceptional know-how which was integrated into Bulgari’s state-of-the-art manufacture in Le Sentier, so permitting the company to venture into haute horlogerie complications such as chiming mechanisms as well as to pursue new challenges like the development of ultra-thin movements, where the Italian brand achieved four world records to date.
In 2019, Bulgari pays tribute to Gérald Genta with a 50th Anniversary watch available in a special edition.
Framed by the famous chunky, round Arena case (diameter is 41 mm), with a smooth, wide, curved bezel in highly polished platinum, the blue lacquered dial is characterized by the Biretro layout typical of many Gerald Genta timepieces, i.e. with date and time retrograde indications. The original Gérald Genta logo shows off at 6 o'clock.
The jumping hours are displayed through a window at 12 o’clock, while the minutes are tracked on a 210° arc spanning the top half of the blue lacquer dial, across which the minute hand travels and snaps back to zero every 60 minutes. Likewise, for the date, arranged in a smaller 180° arc at 6 o’clock.
The 4 Hz (28,800 vph) self-winding movement, BVL 300 Caliber, and its bidirectional oscillating weight boasting a 42-hour power reserve are visible through the scratch resistant sapphire case back.

I remember many Gerald Genta watches in the 1990s. He was a genius. He also created the Gerald Charles brand.
