As a SIHH2019 preview, Montblanc presented two new versions, in stainless steel and red gold, characterized by 44.8 mm round cases, anthracite dials and matching anthracite Sfumato alligator straps. Prices of the Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronographs are Euro 7,450 for the stainless steel model (ref. 119954) and Euro 20,000 for the red gold version (ref. 119964).
Following the launch of the Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph in stainless steel with a silvery-white dial that was unveiled last year (you can read about it here), Montblanc presented two new versions, in stainless steel and red gold, characterized by 44.8 mm round cases, anthracite dials and matching anthracite Sfumato alligator straps.
These models pay tribute to the French watchmaker Nicolas Rieussec who patented the first inking chronograph in 1821. Rieussec developed this construction to more precisely measure the running times of individual horses at a horserace. Rieussec’s device was literally a “time writer,” so he accordingly named it a “chronograph” from the Greek words “chronos” (time) and “graphein” (to write).
The new Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronographs incorporate the recognisable two rotating, horizontally-aligned, discs on the watch’s dial— one for the chronograph’s 60-second counter and the other for the 30-minute counter — which turn below a fixed double index, like on the original device. Both the counters and the off-centred hours and minutes ring are slightly domed to create a three-dimensional effect.
Inspired by the codes of the collection, the slim Arabic numerals are surrounded by a precise railway minute track. Classic leaf-shaped hands, azuré finishing in the centre of the dial and a “filet sauté” guilloché decoration that runs around the dial complete the overall design. The date has been placed at 6 o’clock and enhanced with a sophisticated display applied on the dial with screws.
The timepieces are powered by the calibre MB R200 Manufacture monopusher chronograph movement with automatic winding and column-wheel mechanism that can be admired through the sapphire crystal case back. The 4 Hz (28,800 vph) movement has two barrels which store enough energy for 72 hours of autonomy.
The Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronographs are water resistant to 30 metres / 100 feet and are certified by the Montblanc Laboratory Test 500. The refined straps are crafted at the Montblanc Pelletteria in Florence, Italy. Prices are Euro 7,450 for the stainless steel model (ref. 119954) and Euro 20,000 for the red gold version (ref. 119964). montblanc.com
