SIHH2019: IWC presented the Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium. With this new model, IWC makes use of the innovative new material Ceratanium for the first time in a Pilot’s Watch. The IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium Ref. IW371815 has an indicative price of Swiss Francs 15,000.
As a preview of the Pilot’s Watch novelties that IWC will unveil at the upcoming Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (Geneva, 14-17 January 2019), and after the two Spitfire models presented yesterday, today we introduce the new Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium, a long name that describes some of the main features of the timepiece.
Produced by IWC since 2007, the Top Gun watches take their name from the Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program which provides the best Navy pilots with flying and tactical training. These watches are specially designed with robust materials, such as ceramic and titanium, to meet the specific requirements of elite jet pilots.
With this new model, IWC makes use of the innovative new material Ceratanium for the first time in a Pilot’s Watch. The Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium is also IWC’s first ever pilot's watch to be completely jet black.
Developed by IWC, the Ceratanium material combines the advantages of titanium and ceramic in a new blend: lightweight and unbreakable as titanium and at the same time as hard and scratch-resistant as ceramic. The patented material also offers excellent skin compatibility, a high degree of corrosion-resistance and a matte black colour.
These characteristics enabled IWC to create their first completely black design, without a coating, including all watch components such as push-buttons, pin buckles and case back.
The 44 mm x 16.8 mm round case is water resistant to 6 bar (60 metres / 200 feet) and houses the 4 Hz (28,800 vph) 79230 calibre with self-winding mechanism and a power reserve of 44 hours. Its integrated split-seconds hand mechanism makes it possible to simultaneously measure short periods of time. A soft-iron inner case protects the movement against magnetic fields.
Protected by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, the dial is completely black, hands included, with just a touch of red on the split-seconds hand for intermediate timing. The red accent is also used for the associated push button at 10 o’clock.
Completed by a rubber strap with textile inlay, the IWC Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium Ref. IW371815 has an indicative price of Swiss Francs 15,000. iwc.com
