Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date 70s
The dial of the new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Day Date 70s, presented at Baselworld 2018, captures the look of a 70s model while adding day of the week and date indications at 3 o’clock. As with the vintage piece, it sports a subtle graduated gray colouring, darker on the outer perimeter and infused with lighter tones toward the centre, thus creating the perception of a larger dial size with enhanced readability. Water resistant to 30 bar (300 metres / 1,000 feet), the 43 mm satin-finished case is equipped with a unidirectional bezel featuring a ceramic insert whose indexes are filled with Liquidmetal. The movement of choice is the self-winding Calibre 1315DD beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vph) with a power reserve of 120 hours. Read the full article.
Bulgari Octo L’Originale
First launched in 2012, the Octo by Bulgari brought a fresh new approach to watchmaking with its daring case design characterized by 110 facets. In 2018, Bulgari enriched its collection with the Octo L'Originale (the Italian for The Original). Maintaining size and proportions of the earliest Octo, this new version comes in titanium, a material that, with its fascinating matte finish, contributed to the success of the Octo Finissimo. Titanium is used not only for the 41 mm case but also for the crown and the dial which is completed by applied hour markers. The Octo L’Original is powered by a mechanical self-winding movement - the Calibre BVL 191 Solotempo, driving the hours, minutes, seconds and date functions - which offers a 42-hour power reserve. The 43 mm stainless steel case of the Eberhard Scafograf GMT “Black Sheep” received a black DLC treatment to enhance the sporty look of the timepiece. Black is also the two-way rotating bezel with ceramic insert, 24h scale and luminescent mark at 12 o’clock. And black dominates the dial where the baton-type hands and applied indices are coated with black luminescent material for readability in the dark. A touch of colour comes from the orange of the GMT hand and GMT lettering, clearly standing out against the dial. The triple time zone function is operated via the position of the bezel and the central GMT hand. The “Black Sheep” is powered by the highly reliable ETA 2893-2 calibre, a self-winding movement with ball bearing which beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and guarantees a power reserve of 42 hours. Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Memovox
Issued in a limited edition of 1,000 pieces, this model features the special alarm function made famous by the Memovox Polaris watch launched in 1968. This 50th anniversary timepiece has an iconic three-crown design: one for setting the alarm (top), one for the inner rotating bezel (middle) and one for setting the time (bottom). To set the alarm, it is sufficient to pull the crown at 2 o'clock and turn it counter-clockwise to rotate the central disk and align the triangle with the desired time. Vanilla Super-LumiNova, trapezoidal indices mixed with four Arabic numbers and the triangle in the dial centre serving as the alarm indicator are clear references to the 1968 original. The dial is enriched by black sunrayed, grained and opaline finishes. The 42 mm stainless steel case frames the 4 Hz Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 956 featuring the striking mechanism with a gong. Nomos Glashütte Autobahn neomatik 41 date
Presented at Baselworld 2018, the Autobahn by Nomos Glashütte was designed by world-renowned product designer Werner Aisslinger, whose works can be found in museums around the globe. The Autobahn, whose name is the German word for motorway, was inspired by the world of speed and vintage cars. Equipped with the new, innovative Nomos neomatik date calibre (DUW 6101), this new timepiece introduces a new and dynamic look. The 41 mm x 10.5 mm stainless steel case frames an unusual dial whose edge is curved reminding the outside lane of a racetrack. A luminous ring of Super-LumiNova coated bars makes the watch legible at night too. The date ring runs along the outer edge, set around the movement, and allows for the elongated date window displaying three days at once at 6 o’clock. Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 2018
In 2018, Omega unveiled a complete facelift of the Seamaster Diver 300M, one of its best-sellers, presenting a collection of 14 models. Now sized at a larger 42 mm, the new Seamaster Diver 300M has been redesigned in almost every detail, including the diving bezel, which is now made from ceramic with the diving scale in Ceragold or white enamel (for longer-lasting whiteness and durability). The dials are also made from polished ceramic and are available in black, blue or PVD chrome colour. Omega also reintroduced the wavy pattern (now laser-engraved), a popular feature of the original design. The helium valve at 10 o’clock has been given a conical shape and has been patented by Omega with a new technology that allows it to be operated underwater. The automatic Master Chronometer Calibre 8800 beats at a frequency of 25,200 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 55 hours. Read the full article.
Rolex GMT-Master II "Pepsi" Ref. 126710 BLRO
On occasion of Baselworld 2018, Rolex presented the GMT-Master II Ref. 126710 BLRO in Oystersteel, equipped with a bi-directional rotatable bezel and a 24-hour graduated two-colour Cerachrom insert in red and blue ceramic (aka Pepsi) which calls to mind the colours chosen for the first GMT-Master, launched in 1955. With a traditional hour, minute and seconds display via hands; a 24-hour hand; and a bidirectional rotatable bezel with a 24-hour graduated Cerachrom insert, it is possible to read the time in two time zones at once. The date, shown at 3 o’clock, is synchronized with the local time display. The lugs and sides of its Oyster case have been redesigned, and the watch is fitted on a five-link Jubilee bracelet. The GMT-Master II’s Oyster case is waterproof to a depth of 100 metres / 330 feet. Its calibre 328 is equipped with a Chronergy escapement and guarantees a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. Seiko Prospex “1968 Automatic Diver’s” Limited Edition” Ref. SLA025J1
Commemorating the Hi-Beat diver’s watch with 300 meter water resistance created by Seiko in 1968, the new Prospex SLA025J comes in a 44.8 mm x 15.65 mm one-piece stainless steel case with super-hard coating and the exclusive Zaratsu polishing technique to give the lugs the typical sharpness of many Seiko top models. The watch is powered by the fast-beating (36,000 vph) automatic Calibre 8L55 offering a power reserve of 55 hours. A dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on inner surface protects the black dial offering excellent legibility. Each of the three hands has a different design, length and width and even the LumiBrite on each has a distinct shape so that the time can be read without error even 300 meters down. Zenith Defy Classic
Presented by Zenith in a 41 mm brushed titanium case, and followed by a version in black ceramic few weeks ago, the three-hand Defy Classic comes in two dial variations: openworked or closed. In the openworked version, large luminescent baton-type hours and minutes hands and a slim seconds hand with an emblematic star counterweight sweep over five stylised branches evoking the Zenith symbol. The colour of the minutes ring is a deep blue which reflects the original shade of its predecessor, the 1969 El Primero. Beating inside is a Manufacture Zenith movement – the automatic Elite 670 base calibre – reinterpreted for the Defy. This engine, fitted with a silicon pallet-lever and escape-wheel, is revealed by means of an openworked approach. Blackened, structured and topped by a cut-out date disc read off on a white dot at 6 o’clock, it oscillates at 4 Hz with 50 hours of autonomy. The Defy Classic is water resistant to 100 metres / 330 feet and can be matched to an integrated metal bracelet, a rubber strap coated with alligator leather, or a rubber version.
