In October 2018, Seiko Watch Corporation celebrated the establishment of Grand Seiko Corporation of America with its first ever U.S. exclusive collection comprised of three limited editions in stainless steel, rose gold and platinum.
The new Grand Seiko Heritage Spring Drive U.S. Limited Editions 2018 are housed in the iconic 44GS case with a diameter of 40 mm, dual-curved sapphire crystal and water resistance to 100 metres / 330 feet. The flat and mirror polished surfaces shaped by the signature Zaratsu finishing are perfectly executed and create fascinating plays of light and shadows.
These highly refined cases are perfect frames for the special textured dials created for these limited editions. They are inspired by a Japanese painting technique called Kira-zuri that can be translated “sparkling painting” and that is commonly found in ukiyo-e paintings.
The dial on the platinum model has an additional plating process to create its unique texture and sparkle, while the blue dial of the stainless steel model is intended to recall the blue skies over the Sea of Japan.
Assembled at the Shinshu Watch Studio in Japan, where all Grand Seiko 9R Spring Drive are manufactured and created, the Spring Drive 9R15/65 timepieces are designed, adjusted and tested by hand.
The Spring Drive calibres are powered solely by the force of a mainspring but they differ from traditional mechanical movements for their exclusive escapement system using three different forms of energy (mechanical, electric, and electromagnetic) to regulate its precision. This mechanism, known as the Tri-Synchro Regulator, enables an astounding precision nearly unattainable by any other mechanical watch.
The platinum edition (ref. SBGA385) is limited to 20 pieces and is equipped with the Spring Drive 9R15 which guarantees an accuracy of +/- 0.5 second per day! It is matched to a crocodile strap with three-fold platinum clasp with push button release. Price: US$ 53,000.
Also equipped with the Spring Drive 9R15, the rose gold edition (ref. SBGA384) is limited to 50 pieces with a price of US$ 29,500.
The stainless steel edition (ref. SBGA387) is limited to 558 pieces and powered by the Spring Drive 9R65 which is slightly less accurate than the 9R15 but still exceptionally precise (+/- 1 second per day). Completed by a stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp, it has a suggested retail price of US$ 6,800.
All movements have an autonomy of 72 hours and are resistant to magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m. grand-seiko.com
