Richard Mille recently unveiled the RM 12-01 Tourbillon, an exclusive timepiece that will be available in four different editions, each limited to 18-pieces, beginning at US$ 828,000.
The exclusive model was presented on occasion of “The Bridge”, an annual classic car and art event organized by Richard Mille at Bridgehampton, New York.
The movement of the new RM 12-01 is based on the RM 012 calibre that Richard Mille introduced in 2006. This movement revolutionized the traditional concept of a plate, on which are positioned wheels, by replacing it with tubes to create a three-dimensional architectural ensemble, reliable and efficient but extremely light and aerial.
The RM 012 was the winner of the prestigious "Aiguille d'Or" award - the equivalent in watchmaking of the Oscar prize - at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2007.
While adopting the original architecture, the baseplate of the new RM 12-01 borrows its aesthetic from the chassis of racing cars.
Supported by the baseplate, the grade-5 titanium skeletonized bridges flank the great wheel at the top of the watch and the tourbillon located at the bottom. The movement can withstand over 5,000 g’s and guarantees a 70-hour power reserve.
The RM 12-01 comes in four variations: black Carbon TPT, Carbon TPT with red Quartz TPT, Carbon TPT with white Quartz TPT, and Carbon TPT with Carbon and Gold TPT. The 48 mm x 39.30 mm x 13.84 mm case is water resistant to 5 ATM (approximately 50 metres / 165 feet).
TPT (or NTPT, which stands for North Thin Ply Technology, the company that patented this composite material) was originally developed for the sails of racing yachts and then used also for F1 car chassis and in aeronautics with exceptional physical properties but also a truly unique appearance. Compared to other composite materials, TPT carbon is even more resistant and light, improving the rate of occurrence of breaking stresses by 25% and of micro-cracks by 200%.
Matched to rubber straps with titanium clasps, the four new RM 12-01 Tourbillon will be available exclusively at Richard Mille boutiques in the US. richardmille.com
