Ulysse Nardin novelties 2018; Ulysse Nardin Executive Tourbillon Free Wheel ref.1760-176 innovates with its dial. Full specs, price. Calibre UN-176
The Executive Tourbillon Free Wheel is Ulysse Nardin’s latest interpretation of a model that is immediately recognizable for its contemporary and bold design.
Expected to launch at the end of August, this variation is even more surprising for its innovative dial built on a sleek black honeycomb grid on which the boomerang-shaped bridges and the gear trains look like they are almost floating in the air. The tourbillon and the 7-day power reserve indicator are positioned at 6 and 4 o’clock, respectively.
It is the box sapphire crystal that houses these ‘flying’ elements. Achieving this result was particularly challenging for the structure’s complexity as well as for the difficulty in polishing the interior box angles. All the components are visible on the dial side.
Protected by a 44 mm x 13.50 mm grey gold or red gold case, the hand-wound Calibre UN-176 slowly beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of around 170 hours or 7 days.
Entirely developed in-house in La Chaux-de-Fonds, this movement features a flying tourbillon with the patented Ulysse Anchor Escapement, the result of eight years of research and development and it is based on the principle of flexible mechanisms exploiting the elasticity of flat springs.
This new escapement features a circular frame with a pallet fork fixed in the centre, supported in space on two blade springs less than a tenth of the thickness of a hair in diameter.
Mounted perpendicular to each other, they are subjected to a bending force that curves them and maintains them in a bi-stable state. While they can bend along the left-right axis, they remain perfectly rigid along the up-down axis, thus reproducing the kinetic functions of a pivot (watch the video at the end of the article for better understanding).
This technology replaces the traditional Swiss lever escapement system and uses Ulysse Nardin’s signature low-friction silicium instead of metal or synthetic rubies.
Unlike other Ulysse Nardin tourbillon watches, the Executive Tourbillon Free Wheel (ref. 1760-176) will not be a limited edition. Prices: Swiss Francs 96,000 in red gold and Swiss Francs 99,000 in grey gold. ulysse-nardin.com

Not completely in love with it but the dial layout is intriguing.
ReplyDeleteThe grey gold is way better than the red gold version.
