The Tourbillon Souverain is one of the timepieces that best represent the genius of Francois Paul Journe.
It was with the Tourbillon Souverain that the French master watchmaker launched his own brand in 1999. Produced in only about a hundred pieces, the original model combined a tourbillon to a constant force mechanism. It was replaced in 2004 by a new model — integrating the constant force device (or "remointoire") with a “dead beat seconds” system — which won the prestigious Aguille d'Or award at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie 2004.
In addition to the references with cases and dials in white gold or in red gold, the Geneva-based brand is now presenting an exclusive variation, the F.P.Journe Tourbillon Souverain with Régence Circulaire hand-engraved dial.
The Régence Circulaire decoration motif pays homage to the clockmakers and artisans of the 18th century and it is inspired by geometrical motifs of the Regency period.
This dial is hand-engraved by a Geneva artist using techniques and tools that are part of her trade secrets. The whole process requires at least two days and starts with drawing the motif on the raw white gold dial. Then the artist incises the pattern into the metal using different kinds and shapes of burins.
Progressively perfected with patience and dexterity, the dial is then handled to another artisan, who gives a final polishing to make it gleam.
Hours, minutes and seconds’ dials are made in silver guilloché with the 42-hour power reserve indication at 12 o'clock to counter-balance the independent seconds display at 6 o'clock. This complication is also described with the terms "seconde morte" or "dead beat seconds" because the hand remains motionless ("dead") for as long as the second has not actually elapsed.
Beating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hours and visible through the transparent sapphire crystal case-back, the exceptional Calibre F.P.Journe 1403 is made in red gold and is housed in a 40 mm case which is crafted from the same noble metal.
