Baselworld 2018: Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Annual Calendar.
Considered the world’s first modern diving watch, the Fifty Fathoms was introduced by Blancpain in 1953. The watch was quickly adopted by navies around the world as well as by famous explorer Jacques Cousteau and his team.
Three years after the introduction of the original Fifty Fathoms model, Blancpain created the Bathyscaphe as a smaller diameter diving watch which could be used also as a daily wearer.
This year, together with the Day Date 70s model that we presented last March here, Blancpain introduced the first Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe model with an annual calendar complication.
In the new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Quantième Annuel, the indications for the day of the week, date, and month are shown in windows and arranged in the logical order that most people would use in common parlance. The annual calendar requires adjustment only once per year at the end of February.
The beautifully finished meteor gray dial is framed by a 43 mm x 13.46 mm satin-finished steel case equipped with a black ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel with Liquidmetal markings. Water resistance is 30 bar (corresponding to around 300 metres / 1,000 feet).
The Bathyscaphe Quantième Annuel is driven by a new calibre, the 6054.P, based upon Blancpain’s in-house twin-barrel 1150 movement, which has been modified with extended bridges. Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vph), this robust and highly efficient movement offers 100 hours of power reserve.
The calibre is visible through a sapphire crystal case-back enabling one to admire its solid gold oscillating weight coated in NAC (a platinum alloy) and sculpted to form the raised Blancpain logo appearing in relief.
Fitted with a sail-canvas or NATO strap, with the option of a metal bracelet, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Quantième Annuel (ref. 5071-1110-B52A) has a price of Euro 24,860 with strap or Euro 27,290 with bracelet. blancpain.com
