After the Freak Vision introduced at SIHH 2018, Ulysse Nardin recently launched the Freak Out, not just a single timepiece but four models, all of them powered by the in-house hand-wound calibre UN-205.
With no crown and no hands, the Freak Out uses its baguette movement rotating on its own axis to tell the time with the the lower deck displaying the hours and the upper deck showing the minutes.
Featuring a “flying carousel” tourbillon, the architecture of this movement replaces traditional anchor and anchor wheel with two silicium impulse wheels in the centre. Both wheels have 18 engaging teeth, each activating an alternator that transmits its energy to the balance staff — first in one direction, then the other. Requiring no lubrication, the structure ensures that force is always released in the direction of the balance rotation, thereby minimizing friction.
The silicium hairspring beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and is only very slightly disturbed. The amount of disturbance is reduced to a minimum thanks to the low lift angle.
Located between the lugs above the lower strap, a small lock is used to liberate the rotating bezel that can be used to adjust the hours and minutes when turned in either direction. The barrel, which offers a 7-day power reserve, is wound using the rear caseback bezel mounted on ball bearings.
The 45 mm case of the four new models has been restyled and is crafted from titanium, making the Freak Out accessible to a wider audience. We list below the four versions.
Ulysse Nardin Freak Out Full Black
The sportiest model comes with a full black PVD surface treatment, a gear-train bridge in silver and is matched to sailcloth strap with red stitching secured by a titanium folding clasp.
Ulysse Nardin Freak Out Black Gold
A gold gear train and gold stitches for the most elegant of the four models.
Ulysse Nardin Freak Out Of The Blue
The marine blue typical of the brand is combined to a silver gear-train bridge and silver stitches for the sailcloth strap.
Ulysse Nardin Freak Out Blue Gold
And finally a version where the Ulysse Nardin marine blue is enriched by a gold gear-train bridge and gold stitches for the sailcloth strap.
