Richard Mille - RM 71-01 Automatic Tourbillon Talisman. Richard Mille’s dedication to the feminine world is confirmed by its latest creation: the RM 71-01 Automatic Tourbillon Talisman. Presented in ten variations characterised by a great variety of finishes, precious stones and setting, this is the first Richard Mille watch that features an in-house automatic tourbillon movement. The Richard Mille RM 71-01 Automatic Tourbillon Talisman is a limited suite of 10 variations, each produced in an edition of just 5 pieces.
Although Richard Mille is often associated to technical, high-performance watches that draw inspiration from the automotive and aeronautics industries, Ladies’ watches represent an important part in the collection of the brand as well as a considerable percentage of total sales.
Designer and Ladies’ Collection Director Cécile Guenat explained that the collection was born from a combination of Tribal arts and Art Deco references. In each variation, she highlighted the skeleton movement through the many possibilities for setting and engraving the case. Heightened by sparkling stones, the shape of the dials reveals two deliberately distinct worlds, one that is organic and the other more urban.
The design and execution of the watch required a complete conceptual approach to the movement, case and dial with jewellery artisans, dial-maker and watchmakers cooperating as an interconnected whole.
The eighth in-house movement of Richard Mille, the skeletonised and tonneau-shaped Calibre CRMT1 is just 6.2 mm thick and weighs 8 grams. The mechanism incorporates a new automatic tourbillon that is particularly slim, ultra-high performance and enhanced with sparkling diamonds, mother-of-pearl, onyx and black sapphires. The baseplate protecting the tourbillon’s rotation remains open to preserve transparency.
Beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a power reserve of 50 hours, the new movement features a gem-set bidirectional rotor with variable geometry that enables winding to be adjusted to the owner’s activity level. Adjusting the two weights, which can be slid sideways into the correct position and fixed in place by spline screws, modifies the setting. If the weights are positioned at either end of the rotor, the inertia is considerably reduced, resulting in the barrel winding more slowly.
Crafted from red gold or white gold and water resistant to 50 metres / 165 feet, the case has a three-part construction (bezel, caseband and caseback). 44 different stamping operations are required for the three components. Just imagine that the machine tooling process requires 2 days of adjustment for each component. Engraving the name “Richard Mille” on the inside curve of the back of each case requires 45 minutes alone.
The bezel is adorned with diamonds in permutations that vary in the number, shape and size of the stones according to the version.
Each dial, a mere 0.9 mm in thickness, is hand set with mother-of-pearl, onyx and diamonds. Not only beautiful, this dial is a technical feat due to the great number of different finishing operations that must be performed in a very small area arranged on several levels.
Housing a tourbillon movement in this narrow and curved case was a challenge just as much as ensuring total reliability in terms of chronometric performance and shock resistance. The result is a unique and precious watch which is not fragile at all.
