Legendary camera manufacturer Leica Camera AG expanded its product range with a new line of mechanical watches made in small series.
Two models – the Leica L1 and the Leica L2 – will initially be available. Both were designed by Professor Achim Heine, responsible for the design of many Leica Camera products over the years.
Leica’s design principles are evident in several elements and features of the watches: the minimalism of hands and indexes, the shape of the stainless-steel case, the power reserve indicator, the special fluting on the crown and the cambered shape of the glass that is reminiscent of a camera lens.
Both models are operated by a mechanical movement with manual winding, which has been newly developed and can be viewed through the glass case back made of robust sapphire crystal.
To fully respect the “Made in Germany” claim, Leica collaborated with Lehmann Präzision GmbH for the development of the new movement and the production of most of its components. Finishing, casing, and final assembly are executed at Ernst Leitz Werkstätten GmbH on the Leitz Park campus in Wetzlar, Germany where the Leica Factory is also based.
The movement of the Leica L1 beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 60 hours. Functions include hours, minutes, small second, date window, power reserve indicator with gradually closing blades and crown position indicator.
The 41 mm x 14 mm case features a patented push-piece crown to set the time and return the seconds hand to zero. Instead of pulling out the crown, the user just has to push it to set the time and then push it again to set the movement in motion again. A separate push-button is used to change the date.
Protected by an anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, the matte black dial is enhanced by a red small seconds hand.
While providing the same functionalities of the L1 model, the Leica L2 also offers the possibility to set an additional time zone via a dedicated GMT crown. The second time zone is displayed along the outer rim of the dial.
Water resistant to 50 metres / 165 feet, the Leica L1 and Leica L2 will be available in selected Leica Stores as well as at watch dealers worldwide from autumn 2018. The L2 model will also be available in a version with an 18 karat rose gold case. Limited special models with a red dial will also be released. Retail prices will start at Euro 9,900 for the Leica L1 model. ernst-leitz-werkstaetten.com
