Developed in Japan in the 17th century, this technique differs from porcelain enamel because the dial is here polished after firing, a very challenging process if you consider that a watch dial is less than 1 mm thick.
Confirming its attention to ecological sustainability, Seiko uses a lead-free glaze that was specially developed for these watches. The painting and firing (at 800 degrees Celsius) processes are repeated several times to achieve a perfectly smooth surface.
Seiko explains that the deep blue of the enamel is inspired to the colour of the seas around Japan
while the dial pattern echoes its waves.
The first Seiko Presage Shippo Enamel model is the three-hand plus date Reference SPB075 which is powered by the automatic Calibre 6R15 beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour with 50 hours of power reserve. Its stainless steel case has a diameter of 40 mm and is 12.4 mm thick.
The second model, the Reference SPB073, adds a power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock as well as a calendar subdial at 6 o’clock. The stainless steel is slightly larger at 40.6 mm and thicker (14.1 mm) compared to the three-hand model. The automatic Calibre 6R27 has a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vph) and guarantees an autonomy of 45 hours.
Both watches are water resistant to 100 metres / 330 feet and resistant to magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m.
Completed by crocodile straps with three-fold clasps, the new Seiko Presage Shippo Enamel models are issued in two limited editions of 2,500 pieces each with prices of Euro 1,450 / US$ 1,400 (SPB075) and Euro 1,650 / US$ 1,600 (SPB073). seiko-presage.com
